Game Overview
I remember Peter & Sons launching back in 2019 and being immediately impressed with some of their earlier slots. The graphics, animations, and production quality always stood out, especially for such a young development company. However, they offered more than just great looking games, as many titles were innovative, engaging, and, above all else, entertaining to play. It’s fair to say the firm has released some explosive slots since then, but none, in terms of the theme, are quite as explosive, at least in the literal sense, as their latest slot, Gunpowder. This new release takes us back to the early days of naval warfare and ships with gunpowder-powered cannons doing battle across oceans far and wide. A quick look at the vitals suggests Gunpowder is a reasonably simple slot. However, with a 10,000x max win, this 5-reel 10 payline slot with a 96.30% RTP would seem capable of igniting your bankroll.
But what about the features? Are they enough to blast the gameplay experience into the next dimension, or will they just fizzle out? Well, ships do battle in an exciting wild respins feature that can create new wild symbols with up to 3x multipliers. The battles continue in a free spins bonus featuring sticky wilds that remain throughout the feature and again can hold multiplier values of up to 3x. You can also buy straight into that free spins game via a buy bonus option if you’d rather skip the base game.
Will Gunpowder prove a flash in the pan or lead to an explosion of popularity? The key here is to avoid going off half-cocked by forming an opinion based on what we know so far. Instead, I suggest you keep your powder dry until you fire off a few rounds on the Gunpowder demo slot below.
Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
It’s unclear what this battle is about or who it’s between, but the Skull & Crossbones flags on some ships suggest pirates are involved. Those pesky plunderers have been the theme of many slots over the years, but avast, ye mateys, only a few have proved any good. One that stands out is Dead Man’s Gold from Elk Games, which offers a huge top win of 25,000x the stake across 262,144 payways. Plus, who can forget The Goonies demo play slot here on our platform from provider Blueprint Gaming, based on the cult movie which followed a group of friends hunting for One-Eyed Willy’s treasure?
Whether you have one, two, or three eyes, it’s about time we cast them over Gunpowder’s paytable to see if there’s the chance to light a fuse under our bankrolls. The slot features ten regular symbols, half of which are different coloured ships. The Gold Ship tops the charts and returns 20x the stake when it lines up five times along one of the ten paylines, followed by the Green and Blue Ships, both of which have a top win of 12x. Completing the premium section, we set sail with the Purple and Pink Ships, both delivering 10x for a full line of five. Moving onto the low pays, we have the classic royals, with the Ace, King, and Queen offering up to 5x, 3.5x, and 3x, respectively, while the Jack and Ten are the bottom of the barrel with a shared top win of 2.5x.
Players are spoilt for choice regarding the stake sizes available on the Gunpowder slot. The minimum bet starts at €0.10 a spin and progresses with 15 further options before reaching the maximum of €50.00.
Base Game & Modifiers
There’s nothing complicated about the mechanics used on the Gunpowder slot, as you have a commonly used 5×3 reel configuration and 10-fixed paylines to plunder some wins. As long as the first symbol is on the first reel, you’ll receive payouts when three or more matching symbols form across a payline from left to right.
Phantom Power Respins
Providing some much-needed Boom during an otherwise stale base game is a randomly triggered Phantom Power Respins feature. Whenever a Wild Symbol lands in any position, it remains sticky on the reels while there is a respin of all other positions. If high-paying ship symbols appear around the Wild, it will battle those ships and turn them into wilds with a 1x, 2x, or 3x multiplier if it wins. A victory also ensures another respin.
Golden Bet
For 0.5x on top of your current spin bet, activating the Golden Bet increases the chances of landing Wild symbols and triggering the free spins bonus game.
Gunpowder Slot Bonus Features
There’s just one bonus game on Gunpowder, and if three scatters land to trigger it, you’ll receive 10 free spins, while four and five give you 12 or 15, respectively.
Free Spins
During this bonus round, all wild symbols remain sticky on the reels and should you land one on each reel, you’ll receive an additional 5 free spins. While the Phantom Power feature can trigger during this bonus, you’ll not receive respins. Instead, the wild symbols will create additional sticky wilds with multipliers of up to 3x.
Bonus Buy
I know some of you love bonus buy slots, and if you’re in a country that allows them, Gunpowder has you covered. You can pay 170x the stake to guarantee between 7 and 12 free spins.
Pros
- Top marks again to Peter & Sons for the design of this slot game.
Cons
- The paytable prizes aren’t the most explosive.
Gunpowder Slot Review Final Thoughts
Gunpowder is a solid release from Peter & Sons, but it's not a slot I’d imagine will hold players' attention for too long. The game's design certainly can't be questioned, and if the stars align, the features can deliver decent potential. I just found myself getting a tad bored after a while. Still, it may hit the spot for some of you, so I’d still recommend giving it a blast.
