Please mind the gap between the train and the platform. Crikey, if I had a pound for every time I’d heard that on the tube in London, I’d be a millionaire by now. There’s a good chance I’ll be hearing it a few more times too, in this review, as provider Pragmatic Play introduce us to their Going Underground Slot. Spin the 5 reels of this game and play with 20 paylines, an RTP of 96.51%, and win cash prizes up to 5,000x your bet.
There are nearly as many bonus rounds and modifiers on this slot as there are lines on the London Underground! Yes, it’s that’s packed and almost as busy as Kings Cross Station. Enjoy five random modifiers in the base game that can trigger on any spin, and win up to one of five bonus features that you can choose to collect or gamble for more. Reach the End of the Line feature to play a Hold & Win style bonus that can bring some big wins your way.
Okay, get your ticket and let’s get down to the station; I don’t want to miss the review train and have to wait for the next one. If you’d prefer to skip the chit chat on the platform though, and head straight into the action, then jump to the free demo slot of Going Underground that is below in our article.

Going Underground Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Famous for being the world’s first underground railway, the tube in London opened way back in January 1863 between Paddington and Farringdon. In more recent times, we saw the use of the subway in the hit movie The Darkest Hour, where prime minister Winston Churchill rides the tube to get the thoughts of the British public before then delivering his famous speech to parliament as Britain decided to stand up to Adolf Hitler in WW2, rather than to seek a truce. The underground scene was, in fact, romanticised by the filmmakers and likely didn’t happen. Still, Churchill was known to disappear for days and reappear at random locations chatting with the public to gauge opinion. So yes, the director may have used a bit of poetic license in that scene, but oh, it makes me proud to be British; I think I’m going to have to put the kettle on and have a cup of tea and a piece of cake.
Right, after that short historical interlude, back to Pragmatic Play’s slot, Going Underground. The graphics as the game makes its way to our screens are top notch, it has to be said, and we actually find ourselves taken back in time to around the 1960s in London with the game set at Acton Town underground station on the Piccadilly line. The soundtrack is very good throughout the whole slot and captures, in my opinion, the essence of British music up until around the 80s. It’s well worth cranking the volume up, let’s put it that way, and you also get to enjoy the daily sounds of trains coming and going and the commuters having a bit of a chinwag as they wait.
The first stop on our journey on Going Underground is the paytable. As we take a closer inspection, we find the lower pays come in the form of the royal symbols J, Q, K, and Ace. There has been a bit of thought from Pragmatic Play when deciding upon the premium paying symbols in the slot, which are made up of famous British historical characters. So we have Sir Issac Newton, Florence Nightingale, William Shakespeare, Winston Churchill, and Henry VIII, with a 5 of a kind win paying you 10x, 10x, 12.5x, 12.5x, and 25x, respectively. A newspaper represents the wild and pays 25x for hitting 5 of these across an active payline; it also substitutes for all regular game symbols.
Boarding the tube and playing this slot for real money costs from €0.20 a spin, with a good range of bet sizes, then following before reaching the maximum stake of €100. Just before you do set the reels spinning on Going Underground, make sure that you check the return to player percentage value in the information section. This can be as high as 96.51% or as low as 94.50%.
Base Game & Modifiers
Pragmatic Play has armed Going Underground with a 5×3 reel format that contains 20 fixed paylines. You’ll be awarded a win when connecting a minimum of 3 matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost reel. Several base game modifiers can also randomly trigger on any spin. These are as follows:
- Tunnel Vision: Mystery symbols are added to the screen, revealing the same randomly selected symbol from the paytable.
- The Big Smoke: A 3×3 colossal paying symbol or bonus symbol is added to reels 1, 2, 3, or 4.
- Wild Strike: Wild symbols are added to random positions on the reels.
- Shifting Stack: If a shifting wild stack hits, it will nudge to cover the entirety of the reel. These can contain multipliers of x2 or x3.
- Bonus Blitz: This can randomly trigger the bonus round.
Going Underground Slot Free Spins Feature
The bonus round section of the slot is triggered when 3 or more of the scatter symbols land anywhere in view. This will initially take you to the feature wheel, where you will be awarded 1 of 5 possible bonuses. Unless you hit the top feature from the wheel, you will be given a chance to gamble for the next bonus up on the ladder. Just be aware that if you lose the gamble, you will return to the base game with a win of between 4x – 24x your bet.
All of the bonuses are quite fun in their own right and they are all capable of paying you a reasonable win. Check what these are, and how they work below.
Pentonville Bonus
Upon entering this feature, you will be awarded with 5 free spins. Whenever a win is achieved, the winning symbols are marked and form a cluster. A respin is then awarded, and if you improve on the win, additional symbols will be marked too, and a further respin is awarded. This will continue until you fail to add a new symbol to the cluster or you fill the reels.
Kings Cross Feature
Players will receive 5 free spins when this bonus is triggered. Once active, you will note that a cross position is marked out on the centre reels. If a wild symbol lands on a marked spot, then they will all transform to wilds.
Buckingham Palace Feature
A starting total of 8 free spins are awarded if you choose to collect this feature. During this bonus, a new fully stacked vertically wild is added to the reels. If this symbol hits anywhere in view, it will nudge up or down to cover the reel fully. All of the character symbols that are then on the reels will transform into the highest paying one on view.
Canary Wharf Feature
Upon activation of this feature, 8 free spins will be awarded, and a new collect symbol in the form of a till has been added to the reels. On random spins, the character symbols can land with multiplier values of between 1x – 50x attached to them. If the collect symbol lands at the same time, then are values will be collected and awarded to you.
End Of The Line Feature
Reaching the top feature will trigger a Hold & Win style bonus round that initially starts on 5×3 playfield. Extending this to a 5×5 format during your play is possible if you collect enough of the required expand symbols. Once underway, the bonus begins with 3 respins and an empty grid; each time you land a symbol within the grid, your respins will be replenished back to 3. It’s possible for the following symbols to land in view.
- Character Money Symbols: These now hold values of between 1x – 2,500x and will remain on the reels when they land.
- Extra Life Symbol: Collect 3 for an extra life, which will reset the respins back to 3 if they hit zero.
- Prize Boost Symbol: Whenever 3 are collected, all money symbols on the screen increase to the next value.
- Expand Symbol: One more row of empty positions will be added when 3 are collected.
- Multiplier Symbol: Every 3 collected will increase the multiplier value up to a max of x5. This is then applied to your final winnings.
Going Underground Slot Review Final Thoughts
Going Underground is a perfectly chosen name for this slot. Not only because it reflects the game’s theme, but it’s also the name of a brilliant song by British punk/indie alternative group The Jam, which was fronted by the Modfather Paul Weller. I must say that the production and thought that has gone into this title is fantastic, and it’s one of the best Pragmatic Play slots I’ve played and reviewed for months. There is an abundance of features and modifiers for you to explore, and hitting the maximum win of 5,000x certainly seems very achievable. Great slot and a must play game, in my opinion. Gosh, I’m feeling so patriotic right now that I’m going to have to bathe in a big tub of tea and complain about the weather. God, I just hope I don’t have to queue up anywhere today!
