Game Overview

The game I’ll be reviewing today is brought to us by provider Peter and Sons via Relax Gaming slots Silver Bullet programme, which offers developers the opportunity to create games using their proven software platform. It’s themed around two opposites: The little and the large, with a generous sprinkling of fairy dust on top. Let’s enter this magical kingdom and discover what it’s all about. It’s titled Gnomes & Giants, and it’s a high volatility, six-reel, six-row slot with an RTP of 96.19% and a potential maximum win of 10,000x.

It’s hard to envisage huge giants co-habiting with tiny little gnomes. You’d imagine that there’d be a fair few accidental stomping incidents occurring, like that terrible moment when you’re walking down a dark garden path and hear the crunching of an unfortunate snail beneath your foot, but here they are. They live happily in the environment of the games 6×6 grid, which boasts 50 fixed paylines. The features of the slot appear to have been inspired by both fictional races’ traits, with the gnome capable of expanding groups of symbols with a wave of its wand and the massive monster blocks and big synced symbols that can land on the reels seemingly being a nod to the shear physical size of the giant. In the free spins bonus, an increasing multiplier joins the party, and this feature can also be purchased directly through the bonus buy option.

My favourite aspect about the gameplay on Gnomes & Giants so far is the frequency the monster blocks land and how whole reels of symbols can transform into wilds if expanding big blocks overlap; you can get some very nice hits from that combination of features. Why not test this game out for yourself and see what you think? The demo slot is available below, and it’s free to play!

Founded in 2019, Peter & Sons is a relatively new provider, but they already have quite a back catalogue of slots to enjoy. I’ve reviewed a fair few of them myself in the past and have some personal favourites. The pick of the bunch is Barbarossa, a pirate-themed slot with a maximum win of 20,000x that features Yggdrasil slots DoubleMax multiplier mechanic, where every win will double the multiplier value, creating some huge potential. Another enjoyable title is the visually impressive Frozen Age, which bears similar gameplay elements to today’s game, such as the monster and syncing blocks. Finally, I’ll give a mention to the Pop Cop slot, which won’t be to everyone’s taste, but fans of anime are sure to enjoy its graphics. So, that’s the basic overview of Gnomes & Giants; if you’re interested in finding out even more about its features, then please read on; the next stop on our journey of discovery takes us to the paytable.

The highest paying symbol featured on Gnomes & Giants is the Wild, which will return 10x the total stake value for each line of six. Next, we have the Red Giant at 5x, the Yellow Giant at 3x, the Green Gnome at 2x, and the final premium symbol, the Blue Gnome, worth 1.5x. The lower-paying symbols are represented by the card suits with the Heart and Spade, both paying 0.8x and the Club and Diamond, which will both return 0.6x the bet for each winning combination of six.

Wrapping up this section, we come to the stakes, and we have 17 different options to choose between. These start at a low of €0.20 and rise as high as €100.00, ensuring players of all sized bankrolls can find a suitable selection.

Base Game & Modifiers

Gnomes & Giants Slot Base Game
Gnomes & Giants slot base game

Gnomes & Giants uses a 6×6 grid with 50 fixed paylines. All winning combinations are achieved by matching at least three corresponding symbols from left to right, commencing on the leftmost reel along any of these lines. There are three main game-enhancing features to enjoy on Gnomes & Giants, which are present in both the base and bonus games, and these are as described below:

Monster Blocks

These oversized symbols can appear anywhere on the grid in sizes ranging from 2×2 to 6×6. Although they appear visually as single big symbols, they are broken down into 1×1 blocks for the purposes of line pay win values.

Synced Blocks

Activates randomly and transforms all monster blocks on the reels into matching symbols.

Expanding Blocks

Signalled by the wave of the gnome wand, this feature selects several symbols or monster blocks and expands them upwards, downwards, or sideways. If this results in any of the affected symbols overlapping each other, those will be transformed into wilds.

Golden Bet

Players can activate the Golden Bet button, which will raise the cost of each spin by an additional 50% of the base stake value but increase the chances of landing monster blocks and triggering the free spins feature.

Gnomes & Giants Slot Bonus Features

Landing five or more scatter symbols during any single spin will activate the bonus round. The number of starting free spins awarded is equal to the number of scatter symbols on the screen at the time of the trigger.

Free Spins

During this bonus, each additional scatter collected will award +1 free spin and add to the win multiplier meter that begins at x2 and rises in the following increments:

  • Tier 1: x3 multiplier, activated once 5 scatters have been collected.
  • Tier 2: x5 multiplier, activated once 9 scatters have been collected.
  • Tier 3: x10 multiplier, activated once 18 scatters have been collected.

Bonus Buy

Those who wish to jump straight into the bonus game can choose to do so via the bonus buy button, which has two different options on offer:

  • Buy 6 Free Spins: Triggers the bonus game with 6 starting spins, Cost: 72x, RTP: 96.03%.
  • Buy Random Free Spins: Triggers the bonus game with a randomly selected number of starting spins that can range from between 6 to 24, Cost: 150x, RTP: 96.33%.

Pros

  • Lots of entertaining features.
  • Building multiplier and additional free spins in the bonus round.
  • Good graphics

Cons

  • Promising looking set-ups can often go to waste due to the fixed payline system.
  • No cascading reels

Gnomes & Giants Slot Review Final Thoughts

I enjoyed testing this slot, and it's one of Peter & Son's better releases, in my opinion. The monster blocks and synced reels complement each other well and bring excitement to both the base and bonus games. Without the help of the synced reels element activating, monster blocks can often be difficult to connect due to the fixed paylines; ideally, a ways system combined with cascading reels would have been good to see, but we can’t have everything. The building element of the free spins round is good fun, and the +1 spin that each scatter provides, in addition to contributing to the multiplier bar, gives you a chance of reaching those higher multipliers. A solid, well-constructed slot.
