It feels as if fruit machine-themed games are back in fashion with some developers at the moment – this must be at least the fourth one I’ve looked at in less than two weeks! When there are so many options all popping up simultaneously, developers need to do a bit more than usual if they want their game to stand out. On that note, what has Mascot Gaming got in store for us with their Fruit Machine Megabonus online slot? It’s a ten-payline game, but wins are paid for three or more adjacent symbols anywhere on a line. There’s a 95.33% return to player percentage and a top symbol payout of 500x the total bet.
With such a small jackpot prize, it’s clear that this is another low-variance online slot. The last game that I looked at by Mascot Games did not include a bonus round of any kind, but I’m pleased to say that this one certainly does! It’s a three-spin feature, although that’s possibly a poor choice of name in this case, as you can actually get up to five spins depending on the number of triggering scatter symbols. The bonus round uses a different set of symbols but shares the same 500x jackpot as the main game.
I miss the days when fruit machines could be found lurking in the corner of every pub, social club, and nightclub you wandered into! The broader fruit-themed slot category is absolutely enormous and probably includes several hundred independent games. Not all fruit slots are fruit machine style slots – games such as Fruit Machine Megabonus! Have much more in common with Hot Fruits on Fire and Crown of Fire than machines such as PGSoft’s Fruity Candy. Some players aren’t overly impressed by the tendency for most of these machines to look very similar to one another, but that’s all part of the appeal for players who do enjoy them – can you imagine an old fruit machine that didn’t have cherries, bells, or plums on its reel strips?
There are eight regular symbols in play during the base game plus a wild, along with five more that are only used during the bonus round. The most valuable of the bunch is the green star (base game) and cherry (bonus game), which share the jackpot prize of 500x the total bet. In the base game, things soon go down from those lofty heights, however – the bell has a top payout of 200x the total bet, whilst the lucky sevens are only worth 50x for a full payline. That just leaves us with the fruits – the cherries used in the base game pay 20x for all five symbols, followed by the bananas at 10x, strawberry at 5x, lemon at 2x, and the plum at 1x. The scatter symbol also has a small cash prize attached to it – up to 25x the total bet for all five symbols.
The minimum/maximum permitted betting limits available in Fruit Machine: Megabonus! Have been set at €0.10 and €20.00 per spin, respectively. That’s a much smaller spread than some other games from this developer, which makes the small choice of bets available here a little bit less of a problem.
Base Game & Modifiers
When you first load up this game, you could be forgiven for thinking that it’s much more complicated than it is! That’s because the main 5×3 reel set is surrounded by lots of other additional symbols; however, those are only used during the bonus round. The base game is relatively straightforward, but there is one little quirk worth knowing in that three or more adjacent matching symbols anywhere on a payline will award a win – that can be left-to-right, right-to-left, or even on the centre three reels.
Fruit Machine Megabonus Bonus Features
Bonus symbols are present on all five reels in this game, but only three are needed to trigger the feature. There’s also a small cash prize between 2x and 25x, depending on the number of bonus symbols on the screen.
Free Spins
The number of free spins awarded during the bonus game is determined by the number of triggering scatters, so a minimum of three and a maximum of five. I typically call this type of feature a “three-spin” feature, although that’s probably going to seem a little confusing here, isn’t it!
This type of feature uses your remaining spins as “lives” – if no symbols land on the reels during the current spin, you’ll lose one of your lives. If you fail to hit anything three times in a row, you’ll run out of lives, and the bonus round will end. However, if a symbol does land, your lives will be topped back up to their initial value.
During each bonus game round, a winning symbol will be chosen on the extra reel shown around the edge of the main playfield. If that symbol also lands on the main reels, it is considered to be a winner, and you will be paid according to a different paytable than that used in the base game:

- Banana: 100x Bet
- Strawberry: 25x Bet
- Lemon: 10x Bet

Pros
- Authentic-looking fruit machine-style game with all the classic symbols.
- Wins are paid for ‘x-of-a-kind’ anywhere on a pay line.
- It’s always nice to get a cash prize for the scatters – even if it’s a little small here!
Cons
- The top prize of 500x isn’t a cap, but your chances of winning much more than that are probably very low.
- There’s not a great deal to it – fans of more complex slots probably won’t stay interested in this game for long.
Final Thoughts
The artists working for Mascot Games always seem to do a good job on the presentation of their slots, but I do wish that they would include some larger payouts in their games! I typically enjoy fruit-themed slots, but I’d much rather choose to play one with a larger jackpot.
