Game Overview
I couldn’t quite believe it when I realised it had been well over 25 years since Frankie Dettori’s Magnificent Seven back in 1996. For those who don’t remember, the little Italian jockey rode seven winners in seven races that day, a feat never seen before and something hard to imagine ever happening again. Those punters who were optimistic enough to place an accumulator predicting this astonishing event certainly won’t have forgotten it – they’re likely still living off the profits. Playtech has decided to have a bash at recreating the magic of that day in this slot, titled Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven. It’s a medium volatility, five-reel, three-row slot with an RTP of 95.99% and, appropriately, a potential maximum win of 7,777x.
The pre-race odds of Dettori winning all seven races on the card at Ascot that day were over 25,000/1. As his rides continued to romp home, the bookies trembled in their boots, and the punters piled on, loving every minute. It must have been an extraordinary atmosphere at the course and in bookmakers’ shops across the country. I wonder whether Playtech has done it justice. Will this slot be first past the post, or will it fall at the first hurdle? Events take place on a traditional 5×3 grid set-up with players having the option to select how many paylines are active, ranging from a minimum of one up to a maximum of 25, and this will adjust the total stake accordingly. Wins are achieved in the usual way for this type of slot, requiring players to match corresponding symbols from left to right from the leftmost reel. The exception to this rule is the scatter symbols, which have a pay value attached to them and will pay anywhere. On top of that, there are two separate bonus features to chase.
In hindsight, it would be easy to say that Frankie’s heroics that day were more likely to happen than the odds suggested. Many of his rides were short-priced favourites, and he was one of the best jockeys around. But even if you didn’t manage to get your bet on that day, you can still re-live the magic below, courtesy of Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven demo slot, and it is completely free to play!
Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Many slot players also enjoy a punt on the racing, and vice versa; it’s all gambling at the end of the day. So, it’s quite surprising that there aren’t many racing themed slots to cater for this demand. However, if anyone enjoyed playing the horse racing game in the arcades where you put your coin in and select your fancy before watching the simulated race unfold in front of you, then you’ll love Virtual Horse Racing, also from Playtech. It’s a world of animated racing where you can win up to 1,000x your stake at the press of a button. There are all the usual racing bet types available, such as straight win, each-way, forecast, tricast, and even a special bets section. What’s more, there’s even a virtual tipster to dial into if you don’t have time to study the form yourself. Before you give that a try, though, let’s look into the features of Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven in more detail, kicking things off over at the paytable.
There are some quirks to the bet values, as we’ll expand on in the next section, but for the sake of simplicity, when looking at the paytable, we’ll quote the pay values as the win amount per line stake rather than the total stake value. At the head of the field is a portrait of a Smiling Frankie, which acts as the Wild symbol, and each line of these is worth a whopping 7,777x. Next up, it’s the Celebrating Frankie symbol, which will return 2,000x, followed by Riding Frankie, which will pay 1,200x the line value. The final premium symbols are the Gold Cup, at 800x, and the Horseshoe and Finishing Post, which are both valued at 250x. The non-premiums featured are the standard royals, with the Ace and King returning 125x bet and the Queen Jack and Ten sharing returns of 80x the line stake value for five symbols. The final point to mention is that the free games scatter symbols also have a pay value attached to them, returning 1x, 5x, 25x, and 250x, respectively, for two, three, four, or five symbols.
The stake options range from a low of €0.25 to a high of €25.00. These are comprised of multiplications of 25-win lines, and it is possible to bet between €0.01 to €1.00 per line, which produces these total stake values. There is also the option to change how many winlines are active in Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven, with the player able to select every option between 1 to 25 inclusive. This means that, in theory, there are a huge amount of total stake options on offer. However, if you want to have all winlines active to have the best chance to match winning combinations, then things can be quite restrictive, with a total of only six options available, which are €0.25, €1.25, €2.50, €6.25, €12.50, and €25.00.
Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven Slot Base Game
Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven operates on a five-reel, three-row formation with up to 25 fixed paylines active. It’s a traditionally designed slot, and all wins are achieved by matching a minimum of three symbols from left to right along an active payline. All wins must also commence from the leftmost reel. The exception to this rule is the scatter symbols, which have a pay value attached to them and will pay anywhere from a minimum of two to a maximum of five.
Wild Symbol
The wild symbol replaces any other symbol in a winning combination, except the bonus and scatter symbols, but also has a separate payout for two or more wilds on an active payline. This payout is paid instead of the regular symbol win if its value is higher.
Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven Slot Bonus Features
Two bonus rounds can be triggered on Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven slot, which are the Free Games Race, and the Magic Seven Bonus. Let’s take a look at these in more detail.
Free Games Race
Three or more scatter symbols landing during any one spin will trigger the free games race. At the start of this feature, the player will be presented with a racetrack display featuring three horses and asked to select one. A race between the three will then ensue. The winning horse is worth 35 spins, the second placed 15, and the last 10. The player will be awarded the relevant number of spins depending on where the horse they selected placed within the race. These free spins will then play out using the same number of lines and line values selected during the spin when the feature was triggered. More wild and scatter symbols are added to the reels during this free spins round compared to the base game, but the bonus cannot be re-triggered. Instead, the scatter symbols will pay out their value as per the paytable.
Magic Seven Bonus
Bonus symbols appear on reels one and five only, and to trigger this feature, the player must land both during any one spin. Once activated, the player will be presented with a bird’s eye view of a racetrack split into segments. They will then need to pick a segment to uncover either a cash value or a trophy symbol, which will play a video of Frankie Dettori racing and award a +1 total multiplier. This multiplier is applied to the total accumulated win value at the end of the feature. The bonus round will end once a collect icon is uncovered.
Pros
- It is an interesting, under-utilised theme that is well presented.
- High value top end symbols.
- Bonus and free spins feature trigger regularly
Cons
- The base game is fairly bland.
- Bonus features often pay very poorly.
- Limited stake options if wanted all paylines active
Frankie Dettori's Magic Seven Slot Review Final Thoughts
Frankie Dettori’s actions on that day back in September 1996 are the stuff of racing legend. Does this slot live up to that standard? I’m afraid not. It’s a reasonable effort, and I initially enjoyed playing both of the bonus features, which trigger pretty easily in my experience, but I soon realised that neither really possessed much payout potential, and they soon became rather dull, as did the base game due to the lack of enhancing features. On the plus side, the top symbol packs a real punch at 7,777x per line, and I’d imagine the way to achieve the top payout of the same figure would be to get a full screen of that symbol, although I’m not sure how realistic that is. To conclude, It’s pleasing to see a horse racing-themed slot, as there aren’t many out there, and Playtech has delivered the theme well. Unfortunately, the gameplay lets it down, in my opinion.
