Game Overview
As soon as I saw the mascot of Pragmatic Play’s new Flying Hippo online slot, I was immediately transported back a few decades to my formative years of playing Hungry Hippos against my older sister; ah, those were the days. This purple hippo is all alone here though! I’m not sure why Pragmatic chose not to include a few more hippos on this grid slots paytable… didn’t he deserve some friends? You’ll need a massive 25 matching symbol cluster to win the biggest prizes available in this game, and that’s not all – the RTP is strangely low at just 93.99% as well. Throw in a distinctly average maximum win cap of 5,000x the total bet, and I can’t help but feel Flying Hippo is off to a shaky start.
Let’s not be too hasty though – this is a Pragmatic Play game, after all, a developer with a strong reputation for creating quality slots. The headline feature of Flying Hippo is its spawning wilds, and these are generated whenever a winning cluster is removed from the playfield. Depending on the number of prizes won during the current round, these spawning wild symbols can expand in size as well as gain multipliers that can boost your winnings by as much as 50x the paytable amount.
I can’t promise that this game will be as much fun as playing Hungry Hippos as a child, but it definitely has a lot more potential to award a cash prize! Check it out for yourself with our free demo slot of Flying Hippo, available to play below.
Flying Hippo Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Broadly speaking, this is an animal-themed slot, but it’s also the first one I can recall based on the hippopotamus! With that in mind, it’s surprising that Pragmatic Play has not chosen to capitalise on this theme a little more substantially. I, for one, would have loved to see four coloured hippos on the paytable rather than just the games mascot and three stars with faces on! I’m usually a fan of both Pragmatic Play machines and grid slots in general, but my early impressions of this game suggest that it isn’t going to hold up against the likes of existing animal-themed slots such as Animal Madness.
The highest-paying symbol on the paytable is the purple hippo, with a maximum payout of 50x the total bet for a cluster of 25 or more matching symbols. The yellow star takes the second-place spot with a return of 40x for a 25+ symbol cluster, whilst the red and green stars have lower payouts of 30x and 20x, respectively. The low-paying symbols are divided into two groups – the ace and king are both worth 10x for a 25+ symbol cluster, whilst the queen and jack pay half as much at 5x each.
Two controls on either side of the main spin button provide access to a popup window where you can set the bet, coin value, and total bet amounts. In combination, these settings allow you to play at any multiple of the games minimum €0.20 bet up to the maximum permitted wager of €100.00 per spin.
Base Game & Modifiers
Flying Hippo is a grid slot that utilises a 7×7 playfield, an enormous size even when compared to a typical Megaways game! This creates a total of 49 symbol positions, and you’ll need to gather at least five matching symbols in adjacent positions to score a win.
This means that you can theoretically hit as many as nine winning combinations from every initial symbol drop, although the payout for a single 25+ symbol cluster would easily dwarf the returns from all of those small five-symbol clusters.
As with most grid slots, every winning combination that lands on the playfield will be removed from the screen immediately after your prize has been paid out. The remaining symbols will then fall to the bottom of the screen, allowing new symbols to fall in from the top to fill the resulting space. If these new symbols create a new symbol cluster, the process will repeat until there are no more winning combinations.
Flying Hippo Slot Bonus Features
This game doesn’t include a typical bonus round, but it does have a spawning wild feature which effectively takes the place of one. Every winning symbol cluster removed from the reels will generate a wild symbol in one of the resulting empty positions.
Whenever these wilds are part of a winning combination, they will be collected in the meter shown to the left of the playfield. You’ll notice that the meter is divided into several levels – at level one, each wild has a multiplier of 2x or 3x. At level two, these multipliers increase to 3x, 4x, 5x, or 6x. The standard multipliers do not increase once you reach level three; instead, a new feature goes on standby to activate once all winning clusters have been evaluated.
Next, two 2×2 ‘colossal wilds’ will be added to the reels in random positions. These new wilds can have multipliers of 3x, 5x, 7x, 10x, 15x, 25x, or 50x. The ten symbols surrounding each colossal wild are guaranteed to form a winning cluster, so this is the part of the game where the big profits are to be made!
Flying Hippo Slot Review Final Thoughts
I’m a little torn on this machine – the spawning wild feature is great and all, but it’s still hard not to be disappointed that Pragmatic Play did not include a full-on bonus round in this release. The RTP of just 93.99% is well below the industry average too, and is sure to drastically lower the amount of playtime you will receive for a set bankroll compared to a 96% slot. All things considered, this is a rare miss by Pragmatic Play.
