Game Overview
Fawkes is a video slot from Wicked Games that’s themed around Guy Fawkes and his infamous plot to blow up the British Houses of Parliament! The game offers gunpowder barrels, execution-style reel modifiers, stacked wild transformations and multiple free spins modes, and with a maximum win potential of up to 20,000x, it’s Wicked Games’ most potential-ridden game yet. Is it worth a try? Find out in this detailed review.
Theme & Design
Fawkes does a pretty good job of leaning into a gritty, storybook-dark visual style inspired by old wooden puppet shows and Guy Fawkes-era folklore. The reels sit between wooden gallows, and it’s quite a sinister-looking game; even the wild symbol depicts Guy Fawkes being hanged!
Visually, it’s actually pretty well done, we feel, as is the case with most of the studio’s releases. Some of their other games, like Transformers and Eye of Gods, use similarly impressive-looking designs; what’s held the software provider back, so far, in our opinion, is the lack of bonuses and features in their games and the very low maximum win limits. Fawkes looks set to change this, however, so keep reading to learn more!

Fawkes Gameplay & Bonus Features
Fawkes is played on a 6-reel, 4-row setup with a dynamic ways system that starts at 4,096 ways and can expand into the millions thanks to its Wild modifiers. You can bet between €0.20 and €400 per spin, and the slot runs at a default RTP of 96.23%.
Now, the game’s core mechanic is the Gunpowder Cache. This is a seventh horizontal reel that spins beneath the main grid and can land gunpowder barrels. When Barrels land in the base game, they can award Execution Modifiers or trigger the free spins. During bonuses they can reveal wilds or extra free spins depending on which main-reel position they appear under. The wild symbols can only land on reels 2-6, and if a wild lands when one or more Barrels are visible, the Execution Modifiers activate. Here, wilds can expand to cover entire reels, split into two, replicate themselves onto neighbouring reels, or apply a multiplier of up to 3x.
The game’s free spins bonus is triggered by landing 4+ Gunpowder Barrels in the Cache. 4 awards 11 free spins and lets you choose between a Hanged or Drawn mode, 5 awards Quartered Free Spins, and 6 triggers High Treason Free Spins. The latter is the most lucrative, as here, all three modifiers apply on any spin that lands a wild!
Now, during all of the free spins features, landing a barrel below reel 1 awards up to 5 extra spins, while barrels beneath reels 2-6 see them transforming into wilds, and this is how you increase the game’s number of ways to win.
Bonus Buy & Ante Bet
Fawkes offers quite a few Bonus Buy options. You can buy Hanged or Drawn Free Spins for 75x your stake, Quartered Free Spins for 150x, or High Treason Free Spins for 600x. There are also two gamble-style options: the Chance Bonus for 165x or the Big Boom Bonus for 240x, each offering different probabilities of triggering 4, 5, or 6 Barrels.
There are also two Ante Bet options. The standard Ante Bet doubles your stake and trebles your odds of triggering the free spins bonus. The Execution Bet costs 10x, and guarantees at least one Execution Modifier on every spin, while also trebling the chance of landing the free spins.
Pros
- Massive 20,000x win potential.
- Four different free spins modes.
- Unlock up to 5,159,700 ways-to-win.
Cons
- The game is very volatile.
- Quite complex to understand the different bonus mechanics.
- Top Bonus Buy is very expensive at 600x.
Fawkes Slot Review Final Thoughts
Fawkes is easily Wicked Games’ most ambitious release to date, and it finally feels like the studio has produced something that can compete with the types of slots we’re seeing being released these days. The combination of the Gunpowder Cache, Execution Modifiers, and multiple free spins bonuses offers something that the studio’s previous releases desperately needed: variety, action, and win potential.
The fact that you can win up to 20,000x (when their previous release offered a max win limit of just 1,500x) is definitely a step in the right direction, and it’s exactly how they’ll manage to attract new players to give their games a chance. Sure, Fawkes can be a bit chaotic in places, but we really get the sense that they’ve put time and effort into this release, especially in the various free spins rounds.
That said, Fawkes is absolutely not for the faint-hearted. It’s volatile, complicated, and at times a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re new to this style of game. We also think the top Bonus Buy is pretty expensive at 600x, but that’s just the price you pay for entry into a “super bonus” these days. A refreshingly good release from Wicked Games, and one we’ll probably end up playing ourselves!
