Game Overview
I’ve said it before, but Eastern culture seems much more popular in the online slot world than Western culture. Quickspin proves the point yet again with their Eastern Emeralds Megaways slot, an immaculately presented game filled with golden symbols of the East. This isn’t a typical Megaways slot though. The maximum number of payways is 16,807 rather than the usual 117,649, as there are only five reels rather than the usual six. The RTP is 96.04%, whilst the maximum win is capped at 20,000x your bet – just as much as many other Megaways games.
The game features several multiplier wilds that appear on reels two through five and can multiply the value of your winnings by as much as 5x. If more than one wild symbol appears as part of a winning combination, then the multipliers will be multiplied together, which I guess could potentially result in a 5x4x3x2 multiplier – or 120x the standard paytable win! There is a free spin feature, too, with four options – fewer spins with bigger multipliers or more spins with smaller multipliers – the choice is yours.
I don’t need to convince anybody to try a Megaways slot, do I? Our free demo slot of Eastern Emeralds Megaways is available below for your enjoyment. What more do I need to say!
Eastern Emeralds Megaways Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
We could be here all day talking about slots based on the far east – one of my favourite franchises to use this theme is the Sakura Fortune games, but there are dozens, if not hundreds, more. With more than 5,000 years of history in China and other Eastern countries, it’s not surprising that there is a rich tapestry of culture to tap into, and you can’t blame slot developers for taking advantage of that. More importantly, this game looks great, especially when played on a big screen.
The paytable is interesting – the multiplier wilds appear at the top, and whilst they have no payout of their own, they are by far the most valuable symbols because of their potential to multiply other wins. The strange thing is, there is no “high-paying” section on the table – the list starts with mediums, with a monster head topping the list with a return of 3x your bet for a full pay way of five-of-a-kind. Next up, we have a fish with a payout of 2x your bet, then a tortoise at 1.5x and a Chinese bowl at 1x for a full pay way of five-of-a-kind. There are five lower paying symbols, but those payouts are all less than 1x the current stake.
Speaking of stakes, the minimum bet is €0.20 per spin whilst the maximum is €100.00 per round. There are a decent number of steps between these two extremes but remember this is a highly volatile slot so take it easy unless you have a huge bankroll to play with!
Base Game & Modifiers
Most Megaways slots utilise a super-large playfield, but Eastern Emeralds Megaways opts for a smaller five by five design instead. This results in a lower number of Megaways – 16,807 – but also means that the numbers on the paytable can be a little bit larger than other Megaways slots. Despite this, 3x your bet for the highest paying symbol isn’t anything to get excited about, so where do the big wins come from in this game? There’s an easy answer:
Multiplier Wilds
The wild multiplier symbols appear on reels two through five and can have values of 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x. When two or more of these symbols form part of a winning pay way, their values will be multiplied together. You may have noticed that the multiplier values match the reels where they can appear – this is no coincidence, as wilds appearing on reel two will always have the 2x multiplier, whilst those appearing on reel five will always have the 5x multiplier.
Eastern Emeralds Megaways Slot Bonus Features
Hitting three or more bonus symbols during the base game will trigger the free spin bonus round, with four different modes you can choose from. When the bonus round is triggered by three scatter symbols, you can choose between six and 15 free spins, whilst a five-scatter trigger offers numbers between 24 and 60 free spins!
It’s not just the number of free spins which changes when you select a different free spins mode – the value of the wilds on the reels will also change. If you pick the lowest option of 6, 12, or 24 free spins, the wild symbols will be worth between 5x and 8x, whilst the highest option offers 15, 30, or 60 free spins with the regular multiplier values of between 2x and 5x.
Gamble Feature
After hitting three or more bonus symbols, you will be offered the opportunity to gamble your bonus round for a higher value one. Be careful with this option, though – if you only trigger the feature with three scatters, a single loss will forfeit your entire bonus round. If you can successfully gamble your feature, you can access the five-scatter options from a three-scatter trigger. I wouldn’t take the risk personally, but I am sure there are plenty of players who will!
Bonus Buy Feature
For a cost of 90x your bet, you can purchase a standard three-scatter bonus round, after which you will be presented with the gamble feature allowing you to attempt to trade up for the higher value options. The base cost of 90x is reasonable, but if you purchase a few features and lose them all trying to gamble up to the higher value features, your bankroll will expire extremely quickly. If you use this feature, I’d recommend just playing it as-is… but that’s just me!
Eastern Emeralds Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts
It’s nice to see a Megaways slot that differs from the many other Megaways games already on the market. In fact, if I had been QuickSpin, I wouldn’t have bothered licensing the Megaways brand at all, as this game feels completely different. Is it better than a typical Megaways slot? It’s hard to say, in all honesty, but I’d give this one a spin when it goes on general release, that’s for sure.
