Slot Overview

Dusk Princess is a medium-volatility video slot from Hacksaw Gaming that uses a 6×5 cluster pays mechanic, a progressive “Blessing Bar”, Free Spins, and a maximum win potential of up to 10,000x your bet. There’s a lot going on, but is it another classic Hacksaw release? Or does Dusk Princess do enough to make it stand out? Let’s find out.

Gameplay & Bonus Features

Dusk Princess is in keeping with most Hacksaw Gaming slots in terms of theme and design. Look, the game doesn’t look bad, per se, but it’s just not a design style we like that much. Similarly to games like Le Rapper and Circle of Life, we understand what they’re trying to do with the theme, but for us, it doesn’t really “click”.

The game is at least calming to look at; in the background you’ll see a moonlit castle surrounded by purples and blues, and on the right-hand side of the reels you’ll see a Japanese-like princess, giving off slight “Moon Princess” vibes, to be honest.

Theme & Design

Dusk Princess is played on a 6-reel, 5-row grid using a Cluster Pays system, which means that wins are formed by connecting 5+ symbols anywhere in view. You can bet from €0.10 to €100 per spin, and the game boasts an RTP of 96.21%.

At the core of the gameplay is the Blessing Bar, which is a progression meter that fills with every winning cluster. Once full, it adds Wild symbols with multipliers to the grid. If the bar is filled again within the same cascade sequence, its “perks” get better, which is done by either adding more Wilds or by increasing the Multiplier value, up to 500x.

The game’s main Free Spins bonus is triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 of the Scatter symbols anywhere in view. Landing 3 Scatter symbols awards The Dusk Court, 10 free games with a Progressive Blessing Bar that doesn’t reset. 4 Scatters awards The Lunar Court, again, has 10 free games, this time with a head start; you begin with 4 Wilds and a 5x Multiplier. Finally, the Hidden Epic Bonus, The Night Court, is triggered by landing 5 Scatters. Again, you receive 10 free games. In this mode, the Blessing Bar stays full and activates on every spin.

Bonus Buy / FeatureSpins

Dusk Princess also offers some extras. BonusHunt costs 3x and gives you a 5x higher chance of landing the bonus round; Blessed FeatureSpins cost 50x and guarantees a full Blessing Bar activation, while The Dusk Court and Lunar Court bonus rounds can be purchased for 65x and 250x, respectively.

Pros

  • Decent theme with polished visuals (albeit basic).
  • 3 different Free Spins bonuses.
  • FeatureSpins/Bonus Buy options are available.

Cons

  • Base game payouts are pretty low.
  • The progression mechanic relies heavily on long cascades.
  • Hidden Epic Bonus can’t be purchased.

Final Thoughts

Dusk Princess is a fairly well-designed game, if you don’t mind Hacksaw Gaming's low-impact type of design. It’s not going to win any design awards, sure, but it plays well, is fairly easy on the eyes, and plays well, too.

From a volatility perspective, the game sits comfortably in the medium range, but it does offer a decent maximum win potential of 10,000x. Still, most of this win potential, we feel, is found in The Lunar Court and The Night Court bonuses, both of which are very difficult to land naturally. The Hidden Epic Bonus can’t be purchased, either, which is something Hacksaw Gaming had started to implement in a few of its recent games, so this may be a disappointment to some players, too.

Still, Dusk Princess isn’t the worst Hacksaw Gaming slot we’ve seen recently, and it does offer some semi-decent action, if you don’t mind pretty low base game payouts and bonuses that can be very tough to land naturally.
