Game Overview
The Demon Academy video slot from Arcadem is only the second game I have played from this developer, so I was especially keen to explore the title and discover what it had to offer. The first game I looked at from Arcadem was “The Hatters Mad Tea Party”, a game that was obviously inspired by Alice in Wonderland. This time around I suspect that the developer may have taken some inspiration from Harry Potter, although there is an interesting “multi-theme” setting that changes the visual look of the game according to your preferred season. This is a 243-way game with an RTP of 96% and a maximum win of 347x your stake from a single spin.
The introduction screen mentions that two or more reels can lock together at the start of each spin, a feature that is immediately reminiscent of NetEnt’s “Twin Spin”. The same screen also mentions the games wild symbol and the fact that it only appears on reels 2-5… why is it missing from the first reel? Could Demon Academy online slot have more hidden features and modifiers tucked away somewhere? I was intrigued.
I promise I’ll reveal all the details over the next few paragraphs, but if this isn’t fast enough for you then do not worry – we have a free demo slot of Demon Academy available for you to play right here on this page:
Demon Academy Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I looked around some other review sites and most of them seemed to agree that Demon Academy is based on a medieval theme. This makes sense, considering the large castle that occupies much of the backdrop – at the same time, I still couldn’t shake the picture of dementors flying around the castle when I thought of the name “Demon Academy”. The “multi-theme” aspect that is almost a subtitle of this game allows you to change this backdrop to reflect each of the four seasons. It’s just a visual gimmick, but a nice touch all the same. The game also progresses through each of the seasons on its own every few minutes, so if you spend any serious length of time playing the Demon Academy online slot you are likely to see all four seasons eventually.
Peeking at Demon Academy video slot’s paytable, everything seems to be laid out in a reasonable ratio. “Amelie” is the top symbol paying 40x your stake for five-of-a-kind, and the game helpfully assigns a different background colour to each of the picture symbols making it much easier to see if you have won after a quick glance at the reels. “Azure” follows, paying 20x your bet for a line of five, followed by “Sorana” who pays 16x your stake. “Blake” and “Alice” complete the high paying symbols at 10x your bet each. The paytable also contains royal symbols ranging from 10 to Ace as well as a “School Emblem”, but all these symbols pay less than 2x your stake for five-of-a-kind. Nothing to see here.
Much like the previous Arcadem slot I reviewed, bet sizing in the Demon Academy slot game is controlled via a single page in the “paytable” menu labelled “betting”, where you can select between fifteen different denominations – these start with €0.01 and top out at €4.00. The actual amounts of money you end up spending for each spin whilst using these options turns out to be €0.25 at one end and €100.00 at the other, however. This is one area that I feel this new developer could be doing a little better right now – there are no pay lines in Demon Academy, so why not simply list the available stakes as the total amount of cash per spin? It would be extremely unfortunate, disappointing, and upsetting if a player was to accidentally bet their entire balance on one spin due to the current presentation of this important function.
Base Game & Modifiers
Apart from the one potential problem with the stake selection procedure, there isn’t anything else obviously wrong with the Demon Academy video slot. The game uses a typical 5×3 playfield, and the whole 243-ways to win concept is pretty much universally understood in 2022.
Locked Reels Feature
In Twin Spin, the function of the reels locking together was illustrated by an obvious animation prior to each spin; for some reason, this is not the case in Demon Academy. You can see how many reels have locked together immediately after each spin completes, but it would have been good if Arcadem had added an obvious visual representation of this to increase player suspense prior to each spin.
Seasonal Change Feature
At unspecified intervals the games background and high-paying symbols will change to a new season. There is no difference in the pay outs or gameplay each time this happens, but it still seems important to mention as some players may not understand what is happening when they witness the change from one season to the next.
Demon Academy Slot Bonus Features
Another similarity to NetEnt’s Twin Spin is the fact that Demon Academy does not feature a bonus round of any kind. I have played that game quite a bit in the past and have to say I do not ever remember seeing the wild symbol appear when all five reels locked together. I checked the promotional materials for the game and didn’t find any mention of the wild symbol appearing – or not – on the first reel. Either way, Arcadem makes clear that there is no wild on the first reel in their game. They also say that the maximum win from a single spin is just 347x your stake – a number that everyone would be happy to hit, but one that seems a little low for a jackpot spin.
I hit wild symbols on the last four reels multiple times whilst testing the game for this review, and my biggest win never exceeded 100x my stake. I must have been somewhat unlucky to see such a combination hit several times without any bigger wins. It seems safe to say that this is another lower-variance online slot, given these results, so keep that in mind if you are intending to give this game some real money play.
Demon Academy Slot Review Final Thoughts
In terms of presentation, Demon Academy feels like a step up from the first game I played from this developer. This is a very different type of game from The Hatters Mad Tea Party, which is a good thing and demonstrates flexibility from this new software house.
I would have liked to see some more modifiers and bonus rounds in this title, however; I enjoyed The Hatters Mad Tea Party more on the whole because of the free spin and pick-me bonuses which that game employs. At the same time, this is a far superior game to many low-variance slots from more established developers. That fact alone is a credit to Arcadem and should ensure that Demon Academy will receive some attention from fans of this type of game.
