Game Overview

If you’d have been around in the time of the Old West, it would have taken a masterclass in survival to live for long if you were an outlaw, but if you happened to ride into a town that was haunted, I’m pretty sure your chances of making it until the end of the day would have been slim to none. Well, now we can put that test to the theory as an epic adventure awaits in the Dead West slot from NetEnt, a 6-reel game operating on the scatter pays engine with cascading reels and a maximum win of 10,000x the bet.

Theme & Design

You sure are going to need nerves of steel as you ride into Dead West, with the town looking completely deserted and derelict as the game hits your screen. This is just the start, though, as things get more hectic with each spin, and by the time the bonus round comes, there are flames in the background, the soundtrack gets spicier, and you’ll be literally fighting for your life. Ok, perhaps that’s a touch of an exaggeration, but this is NetEnt back to their very best, and Dead West is a testament to what the studio is capable of when they are not just knocking out pointless filler slots.

Onto the recommendations now, and purely because of the flames in the background, it reminds me of Nolimit City’s Tombstone RIP, so there’s one game to get you off and running. If, however, you want to stick with NetEnt, then that can only mean the iconic Dead or Alive, and its sequel, Dead or Alive 2.

Dead West Gameplay & Features

NetEnt’s Dead West is a 6-reel, 8-row online slot which utilises the scatter pays engine and comes with a standard RTP of 96.03%. Betting options within the game start from a minimum stake of €0.20 a spin, reaching a max of €40.

As we often see in slot games that feature scatter pays, Dead West incorporates tumbling reels into the gameplay, with winning symbols being removed from the playfield and replaced with new ones that fall from above for extra chances to win from just one paid spin. These are particularly useful because at the start of each new spin, at least two hot zones are present on the reels, which contain multipliers. If these are part of a win, their values are applied to each win, and on the cascade that follows, their values will increase, giving you the potential to hit even bigger wins.

In addition to these features, at the top of the main reels, you’ll see a horizontal reel where special symbols can appear. If a win is formed on the reel below a special symbol, in the cascade that follows it will drop onto the playfield and perform its special action. These modifier symbols are the Bomb, Swap, Multiply, Expand, and Expand+.

Next we get to the free spins round, triggered when 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters land in view, awarding 5, 8, 10, or 12 free spins, respectively. These play out pretty much the same as the base game, but you’ll find there’s now a greater chance of the special symbols appearing and activating within the playfield.

Bonus Buy

For players that like to play with more risk, Dead West has quite the enhanced betting menu for you to choose from. The options are:

  • Scatter Hunt: An increased chance of triggering the feature – Costs 1.5x the base bet.
  • Feature Lane Max: Guarantees the feature lane above the reels is full – Costs 5x the base bet.
  • Hot Zone Frenzy: Fills the playfield with hot zones – Costs 30x the base bet.
  • Free Spins: Costs 100x the bet to trigger.
  • Super Free Spins: Costs 300x the bet to trigger.

Pros

  • Outstanding presentation with excellent graphics and audio.
  • A good range of features is present in both the base game and free spins.
  • Likes to give re-triggers in the bonus.

Cons

  • Wins without the multipliers can be relatively low.
  • I'm not sure the super free spins are really worth it, as in the demo at least, they didn't do what they said in the game rules.

Dead West Slot Review Final Thoughts

It's mid-2025 at the time of writing, and NetEnt is having a bit of a resurgence with their releases showing some of the quality in the design that has been missing for a while now. It's not just the graphics either that have improved, and whilst Dead West is not likely to go down as an award-winning slot, it sure is a step in the right direction for the studio, has plenty of features, and again reminds us of what the developer is capable of when it's not churning out pointless releases that are forgotten within a week.
