Slot Overview

Crabby’s Gold II is a new release from Play’n GO, and this high-variance, pirate-themed slot combines a 6-reel, 4096-ways-to-win layout with six different types of wilds, a treasure trail progression mechanic, a Hold ‘n Spin coin collection feature, a Doubloon or Nothing gamble, and a maximum win potential of up to…100,000x. That’s right: a Play’n GO slot offers a max win of 100,000x, so is Crabby’s Gold II any good? Let’s find out.

Gameplay & Bonus Features

Crabby’s Gold II is played on a 6-reel layout with 4,096 ways to win, and the RTP sits at 96.25% in its default configuration, but, as with all Play’n GO slots, lower RTP versions are also available, so it’s worth checking the percentage at the site you’re playing at. You can bet from €0.10 to €100 per spin, so there are betting options for pretty much every player, too.

The game has six different wild symbols, each with their own function. The Standard Wild and Multiplier Wild (worth 2x or 3x) can land anywhere during the base game, along with the Expanding Wild and Multiplier Expanding Wild.

The Compass Scatter is what drives the Treasure Trail progression. Each compass you land adds one position to the trail. When you fill all five positions, you’re guaranteed a special Wild Re-Spin featuring one of three special wilds: the Expanding Sticky Wild (with 3 respins), the Expanding Walking Wild (which moves left until it leaves the reels or hits 10 respins), or the Mega 2×2 Wild (which covers 4 positions on the reels.)

The game’s other core mechanic is the coin collect feature. Coin scatters can land on any reel, and they contain random values between 0.5x and 25x. Coin pouch scatters can land on reels one and six. When they do, they collect all coin scatters in view. If coin scatters land without a coin pouch on the screen, these scatters are collected by the treasure chest, and this grows in size as it collects more coins.

Finally, there’s the Hold ‘n Spin bonus. Once triggered, Coin scatters land face-down and reveal values at the end of the feature, and it’s really your standard respin mechanic; you begin with three respins, and each time a new Coin Scatter lands, your respin count resets back to three.

Theme & Design

Crabby’s Gold II is designed around a typical pirate theme, and you’ll see a grumpy-looking crab sitting on top of an overflowing treasure chest. The reels are set against a kind of coastal backdrop, and it’s all got that classic Play’n GO “feel” to it, so it looks decent enough, at least.

Now, sure, some players would argue that pirate-inspired games are hardly original in this day and age, but for us, Crabby’s Gold II works quite well. If you enjoyed the original Crabby’s Gold, then you’ll almost certainly like what’s been done here, especially factoring in the insane maximum win potential of 100,000x!

Pros

  • Win up to 100,000x
  • 6 different types of Wilds
  • Double or Nothing gamble lets you risk all your bonus round winnings for a shot at doubling them

Cons

  • The pirate theme is extremely over-done
  • Multiple RTP versions of the slot
  • No Bonus Buy option available

Final Thoughts

Crabby's Gold II is a very ambitious Play'n GO release, and that 100,000x max win puts it firmly in the territory of “huge win potential”, but is it realistic? We’re not sure. From our testing, we think it's quite hard to see how you'd get anywhere close to that max win, especially considering there are no jackpots in the game now. Yes, we know the multipliers can stack on top of one another, and there are a lot of different features and mechanics that can intertwine, but even still we'd be amazed to see any wins upwards of 10,000x in the game.

Now, that's not to say Crabby’s Gold II isn't any good. In fact, the game is actually pretty exciting, and we really like the treasure trail progression mechanic, as the three guaranteed special wild outcomes give you something somewhat meaningful to work towards in the base game.

Yes, the Hold ‘n Spin spin feature is a little bit overdone, and the pirate theme isn't the most original in the world, but if you can look past these things and ensure you're playing a high RTP version of the game, this is definitely worth a few spins.
