Game Overview
Some of our readers are probably unaware of the decades-old cartoon Count Duckula – it was a classic, and it would appear Play’N’Go are aware of it too. Their new game Count Jokula is the latest in a string of three-reel slots that have recently hit the market. Top-tier developers such as Hacksaw and Pragmatic Play have tried their hand at the genre, and today, it’s the turn of Play’N’Go. The new game has five fixed pay lines and a maximum win of 8,350x, which is an outstanding amount for this type of game. There’s no word on the RTP yet, but it’s probably fair to assume that it will have a 96% default setting and be casino selectable, as with most other Play’N’Go slots.
Many three-reel slots are lacking in features, which only exacerbates the limitations of the small playfield size. Realising this, Play’N’Go has included a “shapeshifter” modifier and a “re-spins of evil” bonus mode; it isn’t much, but it sure is better than nothing and helps to break up the monotony of the base game enormously.
Hacksaw’s recent game, “Break Bones”, was an excellent demonstration of how to meet the challenge of creating a three-reel game. Will Play’N’Go be able to rise to the challenge too? Find out with our free demo slot of Count Jokula, available to play below:
Count Jokula Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The television show Count Duckula has to be the inspiration for the title of this slot! Duckula was a “children’s animated comedy horror” created by Brian CoSGrove and was shown on British television between 1988 and 1993. The show was also shown in the United States on the Nickelodeon channel, which had previously aired several of CoSGrove’s other shows, including the hugely successful Danger Mouse. It’s a shame that Play’N’Go didn’t manage to get an official license to use Count Duckula in their slot, as the show featured a memorable cast including Igor, Nanny, and Dr Von Goosewing, as well as several amazing villains such as The Crow Brothers, Gaston & Pierre, and the Pirate Penguins.
How does the paytable fare in Count Jokula then? The highest-paying symbol is the joker wild, which will pay you 10x your bet for a full pay line of three-of-a-kind. All of the symbols in this game appear in stacked configurations, meaning it should be possible to hit a full screen of joker wilds for a return of 50x your bet. You’ll need multipliers to reach wins higher than this – see the “Re-Spins of Evil” bonus later in this review for details. The bat symbol will pay you 4x your bet for a full pay line, whilst the stake is worth 2x, and the goblet pays 1.4x for all three symbols. The bottom half of the paytable consists of four fruit-themed symbols, which were almost certainly chosen because of the “classic” three-reel design of the game.
Count Jokula employs the standard Play’N’Go user interface, which means there are several “quick bet” buttons on a row along the bottom of the reels. The left and right buttons allow you to move between the minimum bet of €0.05 per spin and the maximum of €100.00.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game of Count Jokula has a lot resting on it, considering that there isn’t a full bonus round included in the slot. The 3×3 playfield feels especially tiny in an era when many games feature super-sized grids of six or more reels with five or more rows. The limitations imposed by the small reel set force developers to get creative in order to produce an interesting game. Winnings are only paid for full pay lines of three symbols in Count Jokula, which isn’t surprising given the small playfield.
Shapeshifter Modifier
This feature can trigger randomly after any non-winning spin. When activated, the modifier will transform and/or transport standard symbols from anywhere on the reels into joker wild symbols that will create a winning combination.
Count Jokula Slot Bonus Features
There isn’t a true bonus round in Count Jokula, but the “Re-spins of Evil” feature is reasonably close to being one. The feature activates any time a winning combination appears on the reels, including at least one Joker Wild on the middle reel.
Respins Of Evil Feature
In this mode, the Joker Wild symbols on the middle reel will become sticky and locked in place for the duration of your re-spins. Your first re-spin comes with a 2x multiplier, indicated on a meter at the top of the screen, and this will increase with every subsequent winning combination.
The re-spins feature will continue with ever-increasing multipliers as long as you continue to hit winning combinations anywhere on the reels. If you reach the game’s maximum jackpot of 8,350x your bet, the feature will automatically end.
Count Jokula Slot Review Final Thoughts
I was expecting slightly more from Play’N’Go here – Count Jokula is better than average and a decent game as far as three-reel slots are concerned. Of course, there are plenty of amazing five-reel games out there that you could choose to spend your money on too, and I struggle to find a reason to play this game when there are so many great alternatives out there.
