Game Overview
It’s time for yet another slot machine journey back to the East from our reliable friends at Pragmatic Play. Their new Cheeky Emperor online slot is a 243-way affair using a standard 5×3 playfield, but the presentation is typically immaculate, as we have come to expect from this developer, and there looks to be plenty of interesting features under the hood. The RTP is well above average at 96.5%, although the 2,500x cap on winnings offsets that somewhat by being far lower than many other online slots. It’s not the best start, but a winnings cap is only a problem if you are likely to run into it, so let’s find out how likely that might be!
The wild symbol appears on reels two, three, and four and works not only as a substitute for other symbols as a regular wild symbol does but also as a trigger for the separate jackpot bonus game. The jackpot prizes are not progressive – they have a fixed value of between 10x and 1,000x your bet, despite looking like random numbers at first glance. A free spins feature that uses an alternate reel set with most of the lower-paying symbols removed is also included.
I’m not sure if the theme of this game will be a huge draw to many players, but it’s still a fun game that you may enjoy – why not try our free demo slot of Cheeky Emperor below and find out for yourself?
Cheeky Emperor Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The theme of this game is obviously Far-Eastern, like so many before it, but it isn’t as attractive as my favourite game with this type of look and feel – NetEnt’s classic Sakura Fortune. You have scrolls, bags of gold, and other various Chinese or Far-Eastern symbols, and it all combines into a very coherent package, but I can’t help but feel as if the game looks as if it was thrown together a little bit too quickly for my liking. There just isn’t anything original or inspiring about it – perhaps I am being a little harsh, but I seem to review endless games that look just like this. Quite frankly, I expected a little more attention to detail from Pragmatic Play. I’m not saying that it looks terrible, but merely that there really isn’t anything special about it.
The paytable is also a little disappointing if I’m honest; whilst I have learned not to expect too much from games with large numbers of payways, the fact that the minimum bet is very high on this game initially conceals the low value of even the highest paying symbols on the paytable. I’m not sure what the top symbol is meant to be – it could even be a voodoo doll of some kind, but with a return of just €10.00 on the minimum bet of €0.88 per spin, this equates to 11.36x your bet for each full pay way. The sack of gold is worth half that, so only 5.7x or so for five-of-a-kind, whilst the chest is worth just 4.5x, the scroll is worth 2.8x, and the three golden coins in a triangle formation will pay you not much more than your current wager for every full pay way of five-of-a-kind. These aren’t impressive returns, obviously, but the symbols appear in a stacked configuration, which significantly increases your chances of simultaneously hitting many winning pay ways.
We already mentioned the unusually high minimum bet of €0.88 per round, and the maximum bet is a similarly odd number at €105.60 per spin. Pragmatic Play has employed their usual three-control system for choosing your wager, so you do at least get a decent amount of granularity in choosing how much you want to pay for each spin, but it’s a shame they couldn’t have rounded the numbers out or at least allowed a minimum bet lower than €0.88.
Base Game & Modifiers
Aside from the unusual wagering amounts, the base game plays out just as you might expect. It’s a standard 5×3 playfield; all possible winning ways will result in a win, meaning you have 243 ways to hit a winning combination from left to right.
There isn’t anything in the way of base game modifiers, and as the regular line wins on the paytable are less than impressive, you’ll be relying on the two main bonus rounds if you are hoping to score a big win. With that in mind, let’s move straight on to those.
Cheeky Emperor Slot Bonus Features
There are two main bonus features in Cheeky Emperor – first, we have the jackpot bonus game that can award prizes of up to 1,000x your bet, and secondly, there is a free spin feature with an enhanced reel set. We’ll examine each of these in more detail below:
Jackpot Bonus Game
The wild symbol which appears on reels two, three, and four only can trigger the jackpot bonus game at random. It isn’t clear if more than one wild makes your chances of triggering the feature more likely, nor what the overall odds of triggering a feature might be, but I saw this bonus game appear a couple of times as I tested the slot.
Four jackpots are available – the green “Mini” is worth 10x your stake, whilst the blue “Minor” is worth 20x, the purple “Major” is worth 100x, and the red “Grand” is worth 1,000x your bet.
Triggering the bonus game guarantees you will win one of these four prizes, but of course, the mini 10x prize is by far the most common and is the only one I managed to catch while testing this slot.
Free Spins Feature
Three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels will award a small cash prize of between 5x and 50x your current stake and ten free spins. You can also re-trigger the bonus round for ten more free spins at any time during the feature.
There are no limits on this, so you can potentially continue re-triggering the bonus round forever. Don’t get your hopes up, though – I never saw a single re-trigger whilst I was playing this game!
Nevertheless, this is almost certainly the most valuable part of this slot, as the normal reel set is replaced by a secondary one that contains none of the low-paying royal symbols. My returns from this feature were quite good, although I found it very hard to trigger, so much so that I only saw four bonus rounds despite trying my best to trigger more for at least a couple of thousand spins.
Cheeky Emperor Slot Review Final Thoughts
It’s a rare day when I feel that a Pragmatic Play slot doesn’t meet my expectations, but Little Emperor is one such game, unfortunately. I’m sure this machine will have its fans, but for me, there are many better slots with a similar theme that are more worthy of your money than this one. If you enjoy Pragmatic Play, give it a try – otherwise, maybe wait for their next release.
