Game Overview

Castle of Terror 2 is Big Time Gaming’s twisted new chapter in the horror genre, following on from their original 2022 release, and now including some Frankenstein-inspired chaos. With a huge maximum win potential of 20,160x, is it worth playing? Let’s find out.

Theme & Design

When Big Time Gaming’s 2022 Castle of Terror was released, it had fairly mixed opinions. Many players felt as though it had potential but that it hadn’t quite pulled it off like it could have done. That’s where Castle of Terror II comes in.

Imagine stumbling through a scary graveyard at night, only to see a castle in the distance, with lightning crackling above its towers. That’s exactly how Castle of Terror 2 feels the moment you load it up, and to give credit to Big Time Gaming, the graphics are great. They’ve come a long way since their early releases like Dragon Born, and it’s evident their design team is doing a much better job at modernising their games today.

The graphics are set on top of a haunted castle, and you can just make out Frankenstein poking his head out above the reels. It’s actually quite a sinister-looking slot, and for that, we like it already!

Castle of Terror 2 Gameplay & Features

Castle of Terror 2 is played on a five-reel, four-row layout. There are no paylines, as the game uses a 1024-ways-to-win mechanic. This means wins are formed from left to right regardless of their position on the reels. You can wager between €0.10 and €40 per spin. The highest RTP configuration for the game is a respectable 96.48%.

Now, there are wild symbols that can land on reels 2-5, and these substitute for all of the game’s paying symbols except for the scatters. The main attraction of the base game is the Bonus Respin, triggered by landing a single scatter symbol anywhere in view. The actual modifier you get depends on where that scatter symbol lands:

  • Reel 1 (Brains) – Adds extra Brain symbols to all reels.
  • Reel 2 (Alive) – Applies a random multiplier of between 3x and 10x to all wins.
  • Reel 3 (Shock) – Any wilds symbols get a random multiplier of up to 5x.
  • Reel 4 (Monster) – Randomly transforms one high-paying symbol into a wild on reels two, three, four, or five.
  • Reel 5 (Horror) – One random reel is transformed into a wild reel.

Now, landing two or three scatter symbols (or one scatter if you’re on a bonus respin already) triggers the game’s main free spins bonus round, and this awards you with 10 free spins. During the feature, Big Time Gaming’s signature unlimited progressive win multiplier is in play, and this increases by +1 after every winning spin.

You also enter the free spins with two or three modifiers, which are determined by which reels the triggering scatter symbols land on. This means you never know exactly what kind of bonus you’ll get until the scatter symbols actually land! These modifiers, by the way, mirror those found in the base game.

Bonus Buy

Again, like most Big Time Gaming slots today, Castle of Terror II contains a couple of bonus buy options. You can pay 100x your base game stake for a free spins bonus with 2 modifiers, or 300x for a free spins bonus with 3 modifiers.

Pros

  • Win up to 20,160x your bet.
  • Unlimited progressive multiplier during the free spins.
  • Well-presented theme.

Cons

  • The base game can get quite boring.
  • The bonus buy may not be available in all regions.

Castle of Terror 2 Slot Review Final Thoughts

Castle of Terror 2 is, in our opinion, one of the rare sequels that feels better than the original, similar to NetEnt’s Dead or Alive II. We like the fact that the theme has shifted from vampires to Frankenstein, and even better is the fact that the unique modifier system means you’re never quite sure which bonus round you’ll trigger until the scatters actually appear on the screen.

Now, some players may find it strange that we say it’s better than the original, considering the win potential in Castle of Terror II is “just” 20,160x, compared to 61,720x in the first game, but for many players this actually feels more achievable. Plus, the graphics, the theme, and the overall presentation. For us, Castle of Terror II is the superior of the two games.
