Game Overview
The word ‘Castaway’ isn’t really used nowadays – not in my day-to-day life, that is, anyway! There was a time when it used to be the name of one of those almost certainly shockingly bad idea “teen-cooler” type drinks and to be honest; it certainly was far from the worst of the bunch! In fact, I think I would much rather have a bottle of that back in my hand than that horrible VK and blue, whatever it is, that they sell in the bars of today. Euggghhhh. Give me a nice locally brewed lager or bitter any way of the week! Or some Havana Club rum if it’s a special occasion! Alas, let’s get back on topic – Castaway Cove by Relax Gaming is a “connected payway” machine with 466 of those suckers due to its six-reel, four-row playfield configuration. The title screen promises top wins of up to 4,000x the total bet, although I’m not entirely certain how you get there.
The features included here begin with five treasure chests – these are all different colours and, of course, have different purposes. More on that later. The main bonus round is a free spin feature which also includes the chest symbol, but blue coins collected during the base game are stored in the symbol area of all of the bonus symbols located on the reels until you finally manage to trigger the free spins. When that occurs, and bonus symbols landing in position with one or more coins stored on them are involved in the triggering combination, you’ll find that the corresponding coins are pre-upgraded during your next set of free spins. When all your free spins have been played, the visible coins will reveal a prize amount. The paytable notes that if your win exceeds 4,000x the total bet, you will forfeit any remainder, but I have yet to spot how anything over 2,000x is even possible.

Castaway Cove Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Island slots are a funny old bunch – you get games such as Amazon Island Megaways one minute and entirely different stuff such as Captain’s Quest Treasure Island Slot the next! We even looked at a game from a new developer the other day about some guy called Robinson who had found himself washed up on a treasure island somewhere and was trying to survive for 20 years without food or water. What a plot! How could someone come up with anything so… unique, inspired, and original? It blows my mind! Joking aside, the theme of this game is okay, I suppose, but it didn’t really grab me, and I can’t see many players picking this game out based on its visuals alone. That’s a problem too, as the jackpot is also below average.
The most valuable symbol offered in this game is, of course, the captain, who has a maximum return of 30x the total bet for a full “connected payway” of six symbols. Next, his favourite crew mate, the female, is worth up to 12x for her six symbols, whilst the remaining less “useful” team members share equal returns of 0.5x each for a six of a kind combination. As for the low pays, those are represented by rings, all of which share an equal payout of 3.5x the total bet for a complete connected pay way of six of a kind. There’s no premium attached to the wilds; I’m afraid – just the same 30x return as the regular highest-paying symbol.
There’s a hefty bet spread on offer – the minimum/maximum permitted wagering limits have been set at €0.10 and €200.00 per spin accordingly, but there’s a dire lack of intermediate bets allowed in between this huge expanse. I really can’t stand this, but I that in one in every two reviews minimum nowadays, so I will not repeat myself here.
Base Game & Modifiers
The basic gameplay of Castaway Cove takes place on a six-column playfield that sports four rows per column. That makes for a total of 1,024 payways but stops – this is one of those unusual “connected pay ways” machines, reducing the total count from 1,024 to just 466. The way this works is that all winning combinations are required to consist of symbols which meet each other either horizontally or diagonally (IE, corner to corner) – it’s simple to understand and, in my opinion, actually a rather good idea as it has a significant effect on the amount of RTP that has to be allocated to the regular paytable wins. This allows developers to offer better prizes for six of a kind hits and permit even more generous and exciting bonus rounds.
Treasure Chest Symbols
There are five different chests which can appear on the final reel only, and each contains a different kind of reward – a Blue, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Ruby with payouts ranging from 5x – 2,000x bet.
Castaway Cove Slot Bonus Features
You’ll need a massive six bonus symbols to get yourself ten free spins in this machine – that’s a very high number, but thankfully they do show up on a very regular basis. Aside from that, you have your blue coins collected from the treasure chests during the base game to help you to advance existing coins to their more valuable levels.
Free Spins
In this part of the game, all stored coins will activate to reveal a multiplier awarded and paid in line with the current bet amount. The value of the coins collected during the free spins feature is Blue (1-3x), Bronze (3-6x), Silver (10-20x), Gold (25-100x), and Ruby (300-500x). Unfortunately, 2,000x Ruby Coin can only be collected in base gameplay because of the additional multipliers present during the free spins.
Pros
- Who doesn’t love a good treasure island slot? The execution isn’t the best, but its heart is definitely in the right place.
- Being able to win 2,000x during the base game is awesome!
Cons
- Why are the chest prizes so much lower during the bonus round?
- No bonus buy facility.
Final Thoughts
The music isn’t too bad – it’s still playing, which is rare when I play slots nowadays! I don’t think the bonus round is explained very well on the paytable though, and the regular paytable prizes are poor for a connecting payways game with six reels. Overall, I’m not too sure on this one – try it, you might like it, but my guess is that you probably won’t.
