Game Overview
Arrr, me hearties… nope, hang on. We’ve done a pirate review before, haven’t we? I guess it wouldn’t be funny to talk like a pirate for a second time… would it? Whilst I think about that question for a second, I’ll tell you a little about Betsoft’s new slot titled Captain’s Quest – Treasure Island! The game features an unassuming 5×3 playfield with ten fixed pay lines and a 96% RTP. It’s all quite average so far, but wait a moment – the introduction screen tells us we can win up to 25,280x our bet! That’s not messing about money and must be one of the biggest jackpots I have ever seen offered by this developer.
That same introduction screen also mentions several features – wilds will nudge and expand to cover the entire reel every time they land, whilst the free spins bonus round includes enhanced “treasure reels” that boast multipliers of between 2x and 5x. A feature buy facility is included, too, with three options for varying numbers of trigger symbols if you fancy taking a little bit more of a risk.
The votes are in – we’re going to visit this island without too many pirate gags, but feel free to check out our previous pirate-themed reviews if you simply must get your fix! In the meantime, why not try our free demo slot of Captain’s Quest – Treasure Island below?
Captain’s Quest Treasure Island Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Attention, landlubbers! I have drunk too much rum and have forgotten what I was saying. Where were we? Ah yes, pirate-themed online slots. There are lots of these games out there, most of which focus on the aesthetic of the so-called “Golden Age of Piracy”. This was a period between 1650 and 1730, during which maritime piracy was a significant obstacle to the transportation of goods between the British Empire, the Americas, and Asia. The period is often further divided into the “buccaneering period” from 1650 to 1680, the “swashbuckling period”, which I just made up, the “Pirate Round” in the 1690s, and the post-Spanish Succession period. If your knowledge of pirates doesn’t extend further than the Disney franchise, then head over to Wikipedia sometime and delve into the true history – It’s fascinating.
With just ten fixed paylines, I expected to see plenty of big hits on the paytable, but that is not the case with this game. The top symbol, the wild, pays just 10x your bet for each complete pay line of five-of-a-kind, whilst the treasure chest is worth just 7.5x for all five, and the boat wheel decorated with skull and crossbones only pays 5x the current stake. A parrot and telescope complete the “high-paying” half of the paytable with returns of 4x and 3x your bet, respectively. I understand that we have stacked wild symbols and multipliers during the bonus round, but even factoring in these extra features, I couldn’t help but feel that these returns were much too low for a ten-line slot.
Betting options range from a minimum of €0.20 per round up to a reasonable maximum of €15.00 and are controlled by a simple interface with just plus and minus controls.
Base Game & Modifiers
There aren’t many surprises as far as the base gameplay is concerned – Captain’s Quest uses a standard 5×3 playfield, and the ten fixed paylines are arranged in a typical configuration, meaning you should have no problem identifying a winning spin even before the reels have stopped.
You’ll need at least three matching symbols on a pay line starting from the left to bag yourself some winnings, and there is just one base game modifier and one bonus round to break up the action. This is just about enough, in my opinion, although the ten paylines do mean that you won’t be winning as frequently as you do on many other slots.
Nudging Wild Modifier
Each time the captain appears on the reels, he will automatically nudge into place so that he occupies the entire reel. The captain is wild, so catching at least some part of his body on all five reels at once will result in a full screen payout for ten lines of wilds. This sounds great, but my math suggests that it would only be worth 100x your bet, so it may not be quite as exciting as it seems.
Captain’s Quest Treasure Island Slot Bonus Features
Thankfully, the bonus round fares much better than the base game in terms of big win potential! The wild acts as the scatter in this game, which is always a nice twist, and hitting three or more wilds will trigger ten free spins.
At the beginning of the bonus round, all the triggering reels will have a 2x multiplier applied to them, which will be shown at the top of the reel. Whenever a wild lands during this mode, it will increase the multiplier for the reel it lands on by 1x.
Winning combinations that span more than one multiplier reel will be multiplied by the product of those multipliers, which immediately makes it clear why the payouts listed on the paytable are so small. All of the RTP has been allocated to this bonus round! Four reels with multipliers of 5x, 4x, 3x, and 2x, for example, would multiply every win you hit by 120x its base value – finally, I can see how the advertised jackpot of more than 25,000x your bet is possible!
Bonus Buy Feature
If it is permitted within your jurisdiction, you can buy yourself a bonus trigger without having to wait for any wild symbols to grace the reels. The cost for a standard three-scatter trigger is 78.5x your bet – a bargain, in my view – whilst 138x your bet will buy you a four-scatter trigger, and 255x will get you the maximum five-reel trigger.
You still only receive ten free spins regardless of which option you go for but starting with a multiplier on every reel definitely gives you an excellent chance of finishing your feature with a big win. My best result during testing was a little over 800x – not bad for just a handful of bonus rounds.
Captain’s Quest Treasure Island Slot Review Final Thoughts
Halfway through this review, I felt sure that it would end poorly, but the bonus round offered here is simply superb, and I seemed to come out in profit well over 50% of the time when I was experimenting with the bonus buy feature. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for this game the next time I am playing for real money, and I suggest you do the same!
