Game Overview
I’ve been looking at a few different Novomatic slots in recent days, and their Captain Venture Treasures of the Sea video slot is an entirely separate type of game compared to many of the others. It’s still a low payline slot, although this time around, the number is ten – this is often a good sign, as games with nine or ten paylines can often be super high-variance monsters with interesting and exciting features. The RTP is definitely on the low side at just 95.07%, but the maximum win from a single spin is 2,136x your bet. How do these numbers correlate to the game itself? Let’s find out.
The base game has four modifiers that can be activated randomly at any time. Symbols can swap places to turn losing spins into winning ones, extra gemstone symbols can be added to the reels, and there is a mixture of walking wild-type features with free re-spins and multipliers thrown in for good measure. Add in a free spin round with a random multiplier on every spin, and the Captain Venture online slot is starting to sound precisely like my kind of online slot.
As usual, we have a free demo slot of Captain Venture: Treasures of the Sea available right now for your enjoyment. However, I suggest reading the rest of the review first. Once you start playing, you might be there for a while!
Captain Venture Treasures Of The Sea Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Captain Venture may be an entirely original character; then again, he could be a shameless rip-off of Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. I’m going to let you decide on the answer to that one. Surprisingly, the pirate theme isn’t one that is completely oversaturated in the online slot market. Pirates Plenty Megaways from Red Tiger is one of my favourite pirate-themed slots, but I also recommend looking at the Elk Studios Pirots 2 demo and Pirots 3 demo here on our platform if you like the genre, as they are unique games and heaps of fun to play.
I was excited to check out the paytable for the Captain Venture. Treasures of the Sea slot game and felt disappointed to begin with. Unlike most games, the first page actually shows the lower-valued symbols rather than the top picture symbols, so you have to manually skip to the second page before you start to see some of the heavy hitters. Five-of-a-kind of the treasure chest symbol pays out 30x your bet, whilst the anchor and bottle of rum both return 20x. On the third page, it is revealed that two scatters return your bet – not much, but a little consolation for not hitting the feature. Five scatters, on the other hand, pays out 75x your bet, in addition to awarding the free spin feature. The top symbol is Captain Jack… umm, sorry, Captain Venture, who pays out 100x your stake for a full line of five. He also acts as the game’s wild.
Finally, for this section, let’s talk about the betting ranges – the minimum bet is a penny per line, resulting in a total bet of €0.10 per spin. Novomatic has set the maximum bet at €5.00 per line, totalling €50.00 per spin. This isn’t as crazy as some other online slots, but still, you must wonder who has the bankroll to be betting these kinds of wagers.
Base Game & Modifiers

At first glance, Captain Venture Treasures of the Sea online slot appears just like hundreds of others – a 5×3 layout, with a row of buttons underneath indicating that there are ten paylines active (unfortunately, there is no option to play fewer than ten lines in this game). Dig a little deeper, though – or, perhaps more appropriately, dive a little deeper – and you will soon find yourself locating treasure at the bottom of the ocean. Let’s look at the four modifiers the base game offers to spice up the gameplay while you wait for the all-important scatter symbols to drop!
Sea Change Feature
The first time this was activated, I was hoping it would add an additional scatter symbol to the reels. This didn’t happen, but I later discovered that it is indeed possible; you just need to be lucky. Scatters and wilds will remain in place as the reels sink into the sea, but all other symbols will be replaced with new ones when the new layout rises from the depths.
Anchor Drop Re-spin Feature
This is a funny one – any win involving the anchor symbol can potentially retrigger the anchor drop modifier, which usually means the remaining one or two reels sinking into the sea and potentially rising with anchor symbols added to them. The only downside is that the anchor symbol only pays 20x your stake for a full line anyway, and with no stacked symbols in this game, the payouts from this feature can end up being a bit of a damp squib.
Treasure Chest Bounty Feature
I’m kind of torn on this one – the chest symbol can occasionally open and add more “gem” symbols to the reels. When I first read this, I thought, “Oh, that sounds promising”. Then you realise that all the gem symbols are low-paying symbols from 9-A. It is true that this feature can cause you to win on many paylines simultaneously, but in my experience, it still never amounts to a lot. Even a full screen of the Ace symbol would only result in 100x your stake, so… yeah, this isn’t really anything to get excited about, sadly.
Marks The Spot Re-spins Feature
There’s no doubt this is the marquee modifier – the three pages taken up on the paytable highlight this fact very quickly. You’ll need to land a treasure map symbol on the reels, alongside at least one Captain Venture symbol at the same time to have a chance at the Marks the Slot Re-Spins being awarded.
When this happens, Captain Venture symbols will “roam” the reels, according to the paytable, and highlight specific positions. When these symbols land on the specific positions – shown on the paytable, but also presumably gleaned from the treasure map, which activates the feature – multipliers of between 1x and 3x are awarded to any resulting winning combinations. Remember, too, that Captain Venture is wild himself, so if he moves into the right place, this is the modifier which can award a very attractive win.
Captain Venture Treasures Of The Sea Slot Free Spins Feature

On top of all the modifiers, there is also a main feature in the Captain Venture video slot, which is awarded by hitting between three and five scatters during the base game. The scatters themselves pay up to 75x your stake, but the “Mystery Multiplier” free spins are what it is really all about. You can win up to 20 free spins, supposedly, although the wheel that appears after you hit the scatters can be very stingy in my experience – I landed eight free spins on most of my entries into this feature. A bonus buy feature would have been very welcome here!
Every free spin you play during this feature has a random multiplier applied to it. This can be anywhere from 2x to 10x and is decided by returning to the same wheel that awarded you the free spins in the first place. While the initial wheel may be a little bit stingy in terms of how many free spins it awards, thankfully, the retriggers seem to happen quite often. My bonus rounds were extended on many occasions multiple times.
Pros
- It features 4 modifiers and a free spins bonus.
- The free spins can re-trigger multiple times.
Cons
- The RTP is low.
- Low max win of only 2,136x.
Captain Venture Treasures of the Sea Slot Review Final Thoughts
People talk about NetEnt’s “Rage of the Seas” as being similar to this game whilst offering a much bigger maximum win of 27,440x your stake, but after playing both, I have to say that I feel this game is entirely different in so many ways that it really isn’t a fair comparison. Novomatic has created some amazing games over the years, and whilst Captain Venture isn’t quite their best, it is definitely one of my favourites they have created specifically for the online market. Recommended!
