Slot Overview
The Boomberries slot by Elk Studios is a high-variance game featuring cascading reels, spot multipliers, enhanced bets and a free spins bonus round, where up to 25,000x the bet can be won.
Gameplay & Bonus Features
Elk Studios’ Boomberries uses a huge 6-reel 7-row playfield with wins awarded when 5 or more matching symbols connect adjacently anywhere within the game matrix. Standard betting options range from a minimum of €0.20 to a maximum of €100, whilst the slot features a below-average RTP of 94%.
Boomberries uses an avalanche mechanic, better known as cascading reels, so winning symbols are removed and new symbols drop into place. If more wins land, the sequence continues until the grid finally settles.
The main mechanic in the gameplay, however, is the Hot Zone system. When a position is part of a win, it becomes marked. If that same position wins again, it gains a multiplier, starting at x2 and doubling from there. These values can keep climbing during the same sequence, with all active multipliers in a winning cluster added together before being applied.
Hot Zone Strike can also appear during play, placing x2 multipliers onto random positions. If a position already has a multiplier, it gets doubled instead, which can push the grid up much faster when the avalanches keep connecting.
Bonus & Super Bonus
The bonus is triggered by landing 3 bonus symbols, which award 10 bonus drops. Any multipliers already built on the grid carry into the feature, and they also remain active between bonus drops, which is where the game gets much stronger than in the base round.
The feature can retrigger as well. Landing 3 bonus symbols during the bonus adds 5 more drops, while 2 bonus symbols add 3 more drops.
Super Bonus works in a similar way but starts with a stronger setup, as at least one multiplier feature is persistent from the beginning. That gives the bonus more potential straight away, especially if the grid already has decent Hot Zone values in play.
X-iter bonus buys
Bonus Hunt costs 3x and increases the chance of triggering the bonus.
x2 Hot Zones costs 10x and applies a boosted multiplier setup.
x4 Hotzones costs 25x and gives a stronger multiplier boost.
The standard bonus buy costs 100x.
The super Bonus costs 500x and takes you straight into the upgraded version.

Theme & Design
In the past we’ve seen some very impressive themes and designs from Elk Studios, with Pirots 4 and Bushido Gold being two prime examples of what the develpoer is capable of when they are on top form.
Unfortunately, whilst Boomberries does still look very good, it’s not at all on par with the premium content that Elk releases, so if you’re expecting something top-tier here from the provider, you’re going to be disappointed.
Pros
- Uses mechanics seen in many other games, so feels familiar
- Huge top prize of 25,000x
- Includes a bonus and super bonus buy options
Cons
- It's really just another Sugar Rush clone
- The RTP of 94% is low
- Doesn't look great compared to other titles releases by the studio
Final Thoughts
Pragmatic Play had huge success with Sugar Rush and Sugar Rush 1000, and since then we've seen dozens of studios create something similar to try and attract fans of those games to theirs instead.
Boomberries is a valiant effort from Elk, but these styles of games are now old hat, and you can't help but feel this release is just a little too late to the party
