Slot Overview
Behind Bars: Masterplan is a 6-reel, highly volatile crime-themed online slot by Bullshark Games featuring a Hold & Win bonus round and a maximum win of 12,000x the bet.
Gameplay & Bonus Features
Using a 6-reel, 5-row reel matrix, Behind Bars: Masterplan operates on the scatter pays engine, with wins awarded when 8 or more matching symbols appear anywhere within the playfield. Players can opt in for real-money play with bets ranging from €0.10 up to €75, whilst the game comes with a fair return to player percentage of 96.29%.
Each reel has its own multiplier sitting above it, and these are refreshed on every spin with new random values.
Whenever a reel contributes to a win, its multiplier is applied. If multiple reels are involved, their multiplier values are added together before being used, which can quickly push wins higher across a good cascade.
After each win and tumble, one or two reels are boosted further. This can either increase the multiplier by a fixed amount or multiply it again, allowing values to build up during the same spin. Once the spin ends, everything resets back for the next round.
Escape Plan bonus
Landing 3 scatters triggers the Escape Plan bonus, which shifts the game into a hold-style feature using the same grid.
You start with 3 spins, and every time a new symbol lands, the counter resets back to 3. The feature continues for as long as new symbols keep appearing.
Unlike most hold-style setups, symbols don’t stick. They land, apply their effect, and are removed before the next spin, so the focus is on building multipliers rather than filling the grid.
Reel multipliers carry over and keep increasing throughout the feature, which is where most of the potential comes from.
Instant Win symbols land with fixed values, which are then multiplied by the reel they land on and added to the running total.
Booster symbols increase multipliers instead. Some affect a single reel, while others apply across all reels at once, either adding to the value or multiplying it further.
If a spin lands nothing new, a search party can trigger, dropping extra instant win symbols onto the grid and resetting the spin counter, keeping the feature alive.
The Great Escape bonus
Landing 4 scatters triggers The Great Escape, which uses the same core setup but starts with an advantage.
At the beginning of the feature, three reels are given boosted multiplier values straight away, giving you a stronger base to build from as the bonus progresses.
Bonus Buy
Those spinning from regions where the bonus buy button is active can choose from the following options:
- BonusHunt FeatureSpins: Each spin is 5 times more likely to trigger the feature – Costs 3x the bet.
- Surprise Inspection FeatureSpins: All reels have a random multiplier value of 2x or higher – Costs 50x the bet.
- Escape Plan: Trigger this feature instantly – Costs 100x the bet.
- The Great Escape: Trigger this bonus round instantly – Costs 250x the bet.

Theme & Design
The production of Bullshark Games titles continues to improve with each release, as we have seen most recently in Junkyard Kings 2 and Gearlab Genius. The good news for fans of the studio is that we’re being treated to more of the same in Behind Bars: Masterplan, as we join three suspicious-looking inmates in prison who are plotting their escape, with a big win in tow, too.
Pros
- A max win of 12,000x
- Good use of the Hold & Win mechanic
- Four enhanced betting options
Cons
- Not all players like the Hold & Win bonus
- Feature buy options may not be available to all players
Final Thoughts
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of online slots with the Hold & Win mechanic as its core feature, and whilst many of those games are quite generic with how they use that bonus, the same can't be said for Behind Bars: Masterplan.
Sure, this isn't going to be a release that suits all players, with both its theme and the fact Hold & Win is an old mechanic, but Bullshark Games have incorporated it well into a nice-looking game, making Behind Bars: Masterplan a classy addition to their growing portfolio.
