Game Overview
One of the biggest crime mysteries of all time is whether John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, and Frank Morris successfully escaped from Alcatraz, and this topic remains hotly debated to this day. Looking to cash in on this popular real-life story is Red Rake Gaming’s Beating Alcatraz slot, a fairly simple game with sticky wins, increasing multipliers, and a maximum win of 902x the bet.
Did they? Didn’t they? I might not have the answer, but I can walk you through the gameplay of this slot in our definitive review. So, get your homemade lifejacket on; we’re ready for the off.
Theme & Design
There’s little doubt what the theme and design of Beating Alcatraz is all about, and the backdrop to the slot is the notorious prison itself, often known as The Rock. It’s a fair judgement, I think, to say that Red Rake’s games aren’t quite on the level of some of the tier-one studios with regard to the quality of graphics, but it’s still a reasonable-looking game and displays well on all devices.
As it turns out, Red Rake are not the only developer to use Alcatraz as inspiration for an online slot, and if you’d like to see the theme used in a more retro style, then take a look at Relax Gaming and their Hellcatraz and Hellcatraz 2 slots, both great titles in their own right.

Beating Alcatraz Gameplay & Features
Red Rake Gaming’s Beating Alcatraz comes with a 95.30% RTP and is played over a 5×4 reel matrix with 25 fixed paylines active in all aspects of the game. Players can spin the reels for real money starting from a minimum of €0.25 to a maximum of €75, with the slot not offering any enhanced betting or bonus buy options.
The main mechanic in the game is the sticky win engine, which activates whenever you form a winning combination. All symbols in the win remain on the reels, whilst the remaining positions spin for a chance to improve the win further. Additionally, each time the win improves, the win multiplier above the reels advances one step with a max of x10 up for grabs.
Beating Alcatraz also includes a free spins round triggered by 3 scatters landing in view, with 10 spins awarded once activated. During this round, a wild remains in place on the reel for the duration of the feature, improving your chances of hitting a win and climbing the win multiplier ladder.
Pros
- Very simple to understand.
- The sticky win feature is active in the base game and free spins.
- Themed on a popular subject.
- The low volatility will suit some players.
Cons
- Low RTP.
- Low max win of only 902x.
- No bonus buy feature.
Beating Alcatraz Slot Review Final Thoughts
The Alcatraz story is one I've loved for years, and anytime I see the movie on TV featuring Clint Eastwood, I always watch it, even though I've seen it 100+ times before. However, whilst the movie is great, Red Rake Gaming's adaptation on the slot reels just didn't cut it for me, and even though the low volatility brings plenty of small wins to the gameplay, overall I just found it quite boring to play.
If, like me, you enjoy the myth surrounding Alcatraz, you might want to give Beating Alcatraz a few spins, but I don't anticipate you hanging around for long, if I'm honest. My advice, go to the Relax Gaming versions of Alcatraz; they are far better, in my opinion.
