Slot Overview

Bad Santa is a festive-themed video slot from Endorphina that combines a classic 5×3 layout with lots of bonuses and features, including Free Spins, a Hold & Win Bonus, and a Pick Me Feature. It’s a decent trio of features, but is the game worth playing this Christmas? Find out in our comprehensive Bad Santa slot review.

Theme & Design

Bad Santa, not to be confused with Push Gaming’s Fat Santa, is, of course, a Christmas-themed video slot, and it leans heavily into a tongue-in-cheek Christmas bar setting. You’ll see Santa himself looking, to us, a bit like Walter White, donning a pair of sunglasses, sitting at the bar, drinking next to a reindeer!

At first glance, we were quite unimpressed with the visuals, but after a few minutes playing the game, we actually changed our tune; it’s quite well done, and the game looks cosy and creative.

Of course, Santa-themed games are nothing new; titles likeSanta Hopper and Santa’s Vault are just two from hundreds of similarly themed games, but it’s unusual to see what Endorphina has done, presenting Santa as an ordinary guy!

Bad Santa Gameplay & Bonus Features

Bad Santa uses a 5-reel, 3-row layout with 30 fixed paylines, and you can bet between $0.30 and $150 per spin. The game also boasts a very slightly above-average RTP of 96.04%.

There’s a surprisingly high amount of bonus action within the game, and first are the Wild symbols. These can land on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5 and substitute for all paying symbols. You will also notice coloured Bottle Token symbols, which initially cover other symbols and then fly off the reels to reveal what’s underneath.

At the core of Bad Santa, however, is the Lucky Time Feature. This links the three beer glasses on the reels to different bonus modes. Each time a glass is filled by its corresponding bottle colour, it can randomly trigger its associated feature.

Fill the Glass of Ale, and you’ll trigger the Free Spins bonus, receiving 26 free games. These are simple free spins, played at the same stake as your base game spin, and there’s no additional multipliers or modifiers here.

The Glass of Lager triggers the Hold Beer Bonus. When triggered, the reels transform into a grid where only Bonus Symbols can land. These symbols display fixed prize values, and you simply get 3 re-spins, which reset each time new symbols land. The Bonus Symbols can display cash values of up to 30x, or the game’s three jackpots: Min, worth 50x, Mid, worth 100x, or Max, worth 300x.

If you manage to fill all 15 positions during the bonus round, you’ll instantly be awarded the Ultra Jackpot, which is worth 1,000x.

Finally, there’s the Glass of Stout that awards the Boozy Guns Bonus. When triggered, 15 bottles appear on the screen, and each bottle hides one award. Here, you can win cash prizes up to 500x, and you simply pick until you match 3 bottles, winning the prize that they reveal.

Pros

  • Plenty of bonus round action.
  • Slightly above-average RTP of 96.04%.
  • Clear rules, simple mechanics, and frequent bonuses.

Cons

  • No Bonus Buy options.
  • Base game is very dull without feature triggers.
  • No modifiers or “perks” during the free spins.

Bad Santa Slot Review Final Thoughts

Bad Santa is very much a product of a traditional slot design idea, we feel. Endorphina has done pretty much a textbook job of producing the type of game we’d have expected to see maybe 10 years ago but introduced some semi-modern mechanics into the mix, like the randomly-triggering bonuses that aren’t actually progression-based but make it look like they are.

It’s a basic game, yes, but there is some entertainment to be found here, especially as, in our experience, the bonus features tend to land quite frequently. Of course, the trade-off to this is that there’s not really much win potential. Yes, the Hold Beer Bonus can award up to 1,000x for filling the grid, but that’s about the extent of the game’s win potential, we feel, so if you’re after massive hits this Xmas, you may be better off choosing a different game.

Still, if you’re a player who enjoys classic slots structured with a festive twist, and don’t mind seeing Santa looking like the guy you’d walk into at your local hardware store, Bad Santa could be worth a spin. Just don’t expect to hit massive on it, and understand that it’s a simple, no-nonsense slot and not a lot else!
