Game Overview
If you’re not convinced Ancient Aztec is among the most commonly used slot themes, do me a small favour and type ‘Aztec’ into the search bar at the top of the screen – you’ll quickly realise so many slots have been given and more will undoubtedly release with this theme. I’ve never been able to put my finger on why this is the case, but then again, I’ve never understood why candy-themed slots prove popular, either. Perhaps the average slot player is a history buff who enjoys sugary treats? Who knows, and honestly, who cares? I doubt most serious players choose slots because of the storyline – the mechanics, bonus features, and core specs usually count for more. The latest Aztec-themed slot I’m reviewing is Aztec Princess from Jili Games, a 6×5 slot offering up to 32,400 ways to win, a 3,000x max win, and an impressive 97% RTP.
In terms of features, Aztec Priestess is one of a few titles I’ve reviewed recently that uses the Gold-Framed Wild mechanic, but I have to say it works well with the slots dynamic reels mechanic and the cascading reels. Framed symbols involved in symbol wins will turn into wilds that can remain on the reels for a set number of win contributions. As for the main bonus feature, this is a free spins round that offers a global multiplier that increases as chain reaction cascades occur.
I’m sure the above sounds interesting to a good number of you, especially the fantastic combination of mechanics and features, so why not scroll down an inch and click play on the Aztec Priestess slot demo to see them in action yourself?
Aztec Priestess Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I could reel off dozens of other slots that have a similar theme to Aztec Princess, but rather than sending you to random titles to check out; I want to make sure my recommendations will bring you a good time – I’m sure you all know that no matter the theme, there are good slots, bad slots, and some that are bang average at best. Having scoured our many reviews of games featuring this theme, I can tell you that two of the best-rated (in our opinion) are iSoftBet’s Aztec Gold Megaways, a title offering up to 117,649 win ways and a solid max win of 19,200x and Pragmatic Play’s Aztec King Megaways, a slot that ramps up the Megaways mechanic further with up to 200,704 ways available.
Why did I pick out two Megaways slots? Because Aztec Priestess utilises a similar mechanic, although there are a few tweaks to differentiate it from Big Time Gaming’s trademarked random reel modifier mechanic. Before I get into that in more detail, let’s inspect the paytable to see what could come your way should you try out this slot. The Golden Mask tops the charts with 2x the stake paid when it is part of a winning combo of six, followed by the 1.6x paid for the Eagle. Three different coloured engravings come next, with the Green offering paying up to 1.2x, the Blue design rewarding 1x, and the light Green Flower pattern delivering a maximum of 0.8x. The Ace is the highest-paying low-value symbol with a max win of 0.6x, and it is followed by the King and Queen, which share payouts of 0.4x, and the Jack and Ten, which are both worth up to 0.2x.
The stake options on Aztec Princess range from a low of €0.10 to a high of €100.00. There are 15 selections available in total, ensuring pretty much every real money player entering the game will find the perfect-sized wager.
Aztec Priestess Slot Base Game
Now, onto that reel mechanic that closely resembles the Megaways from Big Time Gaming. Aztec Priestess has 6 main reels that will each randomly hold between 2 and 5 symbols and a horizontal 4-position reel that sits above the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th reels. That configuration, depending on how many symbol positions spin in on the main reels, can deliver up to 32,400 ways to win. As with the Megaways mechanic, you’ll receive payouts whenever 3 or more matching symbols land on corresponding reels from left to right, starting from the first reel.
Cascading Reels
Most of you are probably familiar with cascading/tumbling reels by now, but I’ll explain it anyway for anyone who isn’t. Once winning combinations have paid, the symbols involved disappear from the reels, leading to new ones falling into the positions left behind. All of these are regular-sized, instantly increasing the ways to win if the previous symbols were larger. If new combinations are created, the process will repeat until no new wins occur.
Golden Frame Wild Symbols
In the base game and the free spins bonus, symbols may have a Golden Frame around them, and if any of these are involved in a winning combo, a wild symbol drops into one of the vacated positions during the following cascade. Each wild will have a number determined by its size, so, for example, a 3-length wild will feature the number 3. That is not just to remind you how big the wild symbol is but also to tell you how many winning combinations the wild can contribute to before it disappears. Wild symbols will substitute for all regular symbols as long as wins are possible.
Mystery Symbols
Only appearing on the horizontal reel above the main reels, the Mystery symbol will turn the main reel it sits above into a fully gold-framed reel.
Aztec Priestess Slot Bonus Features
The game’s scatter symbol can land in any position on all six reels, and when four or more land simultaneously, they trigger the free spins bonus game.
Free Spins Feature
Triggering the bonus with four scatter symbols gives you eight free spins, while you receive an extra two for each additional scatter that landed on that spin. During the bonus, a progressive multiplier increases incrementally as the cascade wins come your way. The first cascade gives you a 1x multiplier, and you then receive 2x for the next two, 4x for the following two, 6x for another two cascades, and so on. That multiplier will then reset at the end of each spin.
Pros
- Superbly optimised for mobile devices.
- A great mix of mechanics and bonus features.
Cons
- I’d have liked to see more winning potential.
Aztec Priestess Slot Review Final Thoughts
While Jili has leaned on other slots for some of the elements used on Aztec Priestess, you cannot deny the developer has put them together in such a way that they gel well with each other. As always, the visuals are nearly flawless, which is something we have come to expect from this Asian slot provider, and the gameplay offers plenty of engagement. I wish the max win were a tad higher, as 3,000x is low by modern-day standards.
