Game Overview

Interesting historical fact-time: Did you know that the Aztecs used to play a team sport called the Mesoamerican Ballgame? The exact rules are unclear, but it was believed to be similar to modern-day volleyball and would take place on an intricately decorated stone court. The twist is that the losing participants would often be sacrificed, and the next game is sometimes played with one of their heads! The locals were also known to gamble heavily on the game’s outcome to increase the stakes even further. Fascinating stuff, right? Let’s see what more we can learn about this ancient civilisation in BGaming’s new slot release. It’s titled Aztec Clusters, and it’s a high volatility, six-reel, eight-row game with an RTP of 97% and a potential maximum win of 10,000x.

The more I hear about the brutal goings-on of the past, the happier I am to be living in the modern age. Let’s hope the gameplay on this slot will be more forgiving to our bankrolls than the Aztecs were to each other. It takes place on a 6×8 grid, and the cluster pays mechanic is utilised, requiring five or more matching symbols to form a win. These are then removed from the screen, allowing others to drop down from above, thanks to cascading reels. As winning combinations are achieved, multiplier values will be applied to their grid positions, increasing with each subsequent win. The Dig-Up feature can also be randomly activated on any spin, awarding one of four special symbols. These can be either sticky wilds, multiplier boosts, low symbol removal, or extra scatter symbols, three or more of which will trigger the free spins bonus.

Just as life was back in the time of the Aztecs, several features on this game, such as the Wild Spins and higher end bonus buys, would seem to be very high risk. Rather than rushing to lay your own cash on the line, why not have a trial run on the Aztec Clusters demo slot? It’s completely free to play below!

Aztec Clusters Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Aztec Clusters Slot Paytable

There’s no shortage of Aztec-inspired slots available right now, but rather than focus on that theme in this recommendation section, I’d like to explore the game mechanics. The style of gameplay on Aztec Clusters reminds me of certain aspects of one of my favourite games from Pragmatic Play. Ten points to those who guessed Sugar Rush, a high volatility grid slot that uses the cluster pays mechanic, where winning combinations will also leave increasing multipliers behind in their place. You can play Sugar Rush free here on the site if you want to see the similarities I’m talking about. Other titles, such as those in the Jammin Jar series, also come to mind, with elements of all of these games seemingly being used in the subject of today’s review.

The next stop is the paytable, and to achieve the highest payout value for each symbol on Aztec Clusters, you’ll need to match a winning combination of 15 or more symbols. The top symbol is the Purple Aztec, returning 120x the total stake for 15+ symbols, followed by the Red Aztec at 80x, whilst the final premium symbol is the Green Aztec valued at 48x. The non-premiums featured are the Purple, Red, Green, and Blue gems worth 32x, 24x, 20x, and 16x, respectively, for each cluster of 15+.

There are 15 different stake options to choose from on Aztec Clusters, which range from a low of €0.25 to a high of €25.00, with plenty of reasonably positioned bets between. The top end is lower than some higher rollers may like, but that won’t impact the vast majority of those who play the game for real money.

Aztec Clusters Slot Base Game & Modifiers

Aztec Clusters Slot Base Game

Aztec Clusters uses a six-reel grid, with eight row positions on each. All wins are achieved in cluster pays fashion by grouping at least five matching symbols anywhere on the grid. Any symbols involved in a win are removed from the screen, allowing those above them to tumble down and additional random symbols to come into play from the top of the reels.

Cell Multipliers

Any initial winning cluster will leave behind an impression on the grid where it occurs once the symbols involved have been eliminated. Any further wins located in those activated grid positions will then have a x2 multiplier applied to them, and those values will be increased by +2 for every subsequent win on those squares after that, up to a maximum of x10. The multiplier value will be applied to any winning cluster that lands on it, and if more than one multiplier value is covered, then the sum of those values will be applied to the win.

Dig-up

Any winning combination may randomly activate the Dig-Up feature, where one of four events may be triggered. These are as follows:

  • Scatter Symbol: A scatter symbol is added to the grid.
  • Wild Symbol: A sticky wild symbol is added to the grid. If it is activated on a position with an active multiplier, this wild will start with a value of x10. Any subsequent win this sticky wild is involved in will increase its value by +10, up to a maximum of x100.
  • Booster Symbol: upgrades all of the multiplier currently displayed on the screen.
  • Destroyer Symbol: Removes all non-winning low paying symbols from the grid.

Wild Spins

This feature can be activated by pressing the ‘Wild Spin’ button, costing 20x the selected base stake value per spin. It guarantees a minimum of one sticky wild symbol will be active on that spin and increases the chances of a maximum win occurring to 1 in 4,600.

Aztec Clusters Slot Bonus Features

Three scatter symbols landing on the grid during the same spin will trigger the bonus, awarding 10 free spins. Four scatters will award 12 spins, five will award 16, and six will award 20.

Free Spins Feature

Before the feature begins, any scatters present on the screen will spin and reveal either a sticky wild symbol or a x10 cell multiplier. The bonus will then play out identically to the base game, but all multipliers and marked spots will remain active and not reset between losing spins.

Bonus Buy

Aztec Clusters joins the hundreds of other titles on our bonus buy slots list, with players having the option to purchase several variations of the free spins feature via the ‘Buy Bonus’ button, all of which have an RTP of 97%. The choices are as follows:

  • 3 to 6 scatters with no guaranteed sticky wilds – Cost: 100x
  • 3 to 6 scatters with one guaranteed sticky wild – Cost: 200x
  • 3 to 6 scatters with two guaranteed sticky wilds – Cost: 400x
  • 3 to 6 scatters with all scatters guaranteed to turn to sticky wilds – Cost: 800x

Pros

  • Interesting game mechanics.
  • Multiplier wilds offer great potential.
  • Above average RTP of 97%

Cons

  • Wild Spin and top bonus buy can be hard to win on.

Aztec Clusters Slot Review Final Thoughts

Although it often seems like there are long spells between the multiplier cells and sticky wilds coming out to play, when they do, you can really see the huge potential that they can offer. The base gameplay is kept entertaining thanks to these features, and there are big wins to be had here if you’re patient and lucky enough. The free spins bonus builds further on this, where you’ll be hoping to get a good set-up from the scatter reveals to give you the best chance. As for the Wild Spin feature, this is great fun but quite costly at 20x per spin, considering that it can often award a dead spin. However, the other side is that there are huge wins to be had here, too. The top 800x bonus buy is a similar beast, where you’ll either wreck your balance or leave feeling wealthy. There is plenty of fun to be had on both, but caution is advised. Overall, a really good game and one I’ll play again.
