Game Overview

Slot studio Hacksaw Gaming takes you into battle with Army of Ares, a brutal, blood-soaked slot inspired by the Greek god of war himself. Designed around a 5×4 layout with 14 paylines, look out for expanding wild multipliers, three bonus rounds, and a huge maximum win potential of up to 15,000x!

Theme & Design

We’ve got a soft spot for Greek mythology slots, and this one hits all the right notes, even if it is another cookie-cutter-looking Hacksaw Gaming release. However, to give credit to the software provider, this game doesn’t look like many of their older titles, and it looks like they’ve finally started to ‘modernise’ the appearance of their slots!

Visually, Army of Ares looks great. The reels unfold a stormy sky, with a battleground visible in the background. The music, while controversial in places, fits the theme pretty well, and, for us, it’s another good release from the studio along with other recent Hacksaw titles like Chaos Crew III and Le Santa.

Army of Ares Gameplay & Features

Army of Ares is designed around a 5×4 grid, and, unusually, you’ll find 14 fixed paylines in play at all times. You can wager between €0.10 and €50 per spin, and the game boasts a slightly above-average RTP of 96.26%. Be aware, however, that as with all Hacksaw Gaming slots, Army of Ares is offered in multiple RTP configurations. It can, unfortunately, go as low as 86.22%!

At its core, the action revolves around the Wrath Reel mechanic. When a Wrath symbol lands, it expands into a full-reel Wild Wrath Reel, and it will then reveal a multiplier between x2 and x300. If more than one Wrath Reel is part of a win, their multipliers add together before being applied. Each expanded Wrath Reel can also add up to five scatter symbols onto the grid!

There are three main bonus rounds, the first of which, Fear and Flame, is triggered by landing 3 FS scatters. You then receive ten free spins. Here, the Wrath Reels multipliers are worth between 2x and 100x. Multiple wilds and Wrath Reels stack together, however, which is where the win potential is found.

The second free spins bonus, Wrath and Ruin, is triggered by landing four FS scatters. You’re then taken to a new screen and given 3 refilling lives, and it works similarly to a Hold & Win feature. You can land Disc Multipliers and Battle Horse symbols, and these can boost Reel Multipliers up to 100x. They can also multiply them by up to 10x. Now, at the end, Battle Horses all reveal their own multipliers, too, which are then applied to the corresponding Reel Multiplier. The total is then added up and multiplied by your total stake!

Finally, like most Hacksaw Gaming slots, there’s a hidden bonus, Ares Ascends, and it’s triggered by landing five FS scatter symbols in view. This is essentially an upgraded Wrath and Ruin bonus, with a full grid of Disc Multipliers and one guaranteed Battle Horse activated from the first spin!

Bonys Buy

There are a few feature/bonus buy options in Army of Ares, too. The BonusHunt FeatureSpins are available for 3x your base game stake, and playing with this option enabled makes it 5x more likely that you’ll trigger a bonus. You can also pay 60x your bet for Carnage FeatureSpins, which guarantees at least one Wrath Reel per spin. Finally, you can pay 100x to enter the main free spins bonus round directly.

Pros

  • Players can win up to 15,000x their bet.
  • Expanding Wrath Reels with multipliers of up to 300x.
  • Three different free spins bonus rounds.

Cons

  • A high-variance game, which not all players will like.
  • Mechanics largely recycled from other Hacksaw Gaming slots.
  • Some online casinos may offer lower RTP versions of the game.

Army of Ares Slot Review Final Thoughts

Army of Ares doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does do a pretty good job overall, and you’ll see some familiar mechanics from Chaos Crew and R.I.P City returning here. We quite like the Wrath Reels, and their high multipliers, and the design is also very impressive; one of Hacksaw Gaming's better visual efforts for a while, in our opinion.

However, it’s not the most original video slot in the world, and the mechanics inside are recycled. It’s also a hugely volatile game, but this is to be expected for a slot that offers a maximum win potential of 15,000x! Also, it’s virtually impossible to trigger the Hidden Epic Bonus, and there’s no bonus buy option for it, so if you ever manage to land it... consider yourself very, very lucky!
