Game Overview

I really don’t like to start a review in a negative tone – first impressions are often everything, after all, and BGaming’s new Alien Fruits online slot looks like it has a lot of great things going for it. That being said, I simply have to mention a frustrating quirk with the game’s sound – immediately after loading up the machine, you’ll be greeted with some Doctor Who-style swirly alien orchestral sounds. So, what’s the problem? After just a few seconds – and every time you stop spinning the reels – those mostly pleasant notes are replaced by a repetitive loop of high-pitched laser gun-type effects. On the plus side, Alien Fruits is a scatter-pay grid slot – a hot format right now – and boasts a top win of 15,000x the total bet alongside a 95.97% RTP.

Once I began reading through the features listed within the paytable of Alien Fruits, I started to feel a slight sense of déjà vu. The reason for this turned out to be that, yes, I have seen all of this before! Scatter-pay slots are hot with both developers and players right now, and one of the first games to kickstart this trend was Pragmatic Play’s, Sweet Bonanza. The feature set offered in Alien Fruits is a near-total clone of that included in Sweety B, yet its maximum jackpot of 15,000x falls a little short of Pragmatic Play’s game! If you’re making a run for that jackpot, you’ll no doubt be pleased to hear that a bonus buy facility is included for 100x the current stake.

Would you eat any alien fruit? Knowing us humans, we’d probably be more interested in eating the aliens before we tried their fruit! For all we know, however, there might not be any aliens out there in the first place – why not give our free demo slot of Alien Fruits a few spins while we’re waiting for the James Webb Space Telescope to deliver us some proof of their existence?

Alien Fruits Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

The features of Alien Fruits are clearly borrowed from previous scatter-pay games, but that probably isn’t the only aspect of this game which was ‘borrowed’, shall we say! The so-called ‘Alien Fruits’ are strangely reminiscent of the creatures featured in Play’N’Go’s Reactoonz online slot! I doubt that this is a coincidence – there are plenty of other alien-themed machines out there, such as Pragmatic Play’s Cosmic Cash, and Alien Fruits doesn’t resemble those anywhere near as much. Furthermore, if there’s anything that could make a piece of alien fruit look unappetising, surely an angry-looking human face would be it? So are we sure that these are, in fact, the alien fruit? Or are they the aliens? I’m not certain myself… why don’t we fry a couple up with some spicy wedges and Jack Daniels sauce just to be sure?

Scatter-pay games don’t require you to complete paylines or payways of matching symbols to score a win – instead, you only need to hit eight or more matching symbols anywhere on the playfield. There are four high-paying symbols – the pink ‘fruit’ pays 50x the total bet for 12 or more matching symbols, followed by the yellows at 25x, the purples at 15x, and finally, the sad-looking greens at 12x. I guess that even aliens don’t like eating their greens too much! The low-paying row includes one more fruit – a blue variety with a return of 10x for a 12+ symbol combination – along with four standard royals. These payouts range from 2x for 12 for jacks to 8x for 12 aces. There’s also a 100x payout attached to hitting the maximum of six scatter symbols, which is always a nice little bonus in an era where scatters often have no cash payout attached to them.

Regular readers here at Demoslot will be aware of my disdain for online slots with arbitrarily limited wagering options, but I’m pleased to report that Alien Fruits is not another example of this fast-spreading trend. The minimum/maximum betting limits have been set at €0.20 and €50.00 per spin, respectively, and there’s a sensible range of intermediate wagers between those extremes as well.

Base Game & Modifiers

I mentioned earlier that Alien Fruits is more-or-less a clone of Sweet Bonanza in most respects, which includes the 6×5 playfield with 30 total symbol positions. It doesn’t appear to be the same size at first glance, but that’s simply the result of BGaming opting for a tighter grid size with square-shaped symbols instead of the more ‘widescreen’ look used in Pragmatic Play’s game.

Refilling Symbols

Grid slots just wouldn’t be the same without cascading, rolling, or avalanching symbols – all these terms refer to the same thing, and today we have another new way of referring to this ever-popular slot mechanic – “re-filling symbols”!

Re-filling means that after the initial symbol drop, any visible winning combinations are instantly evaluated before being removed from the playfield. When this occurs, the remaining symbols will fall to the bottom of the screen, allowing new symbols to fill the empty positions left above.

This re-filling process can allow you to win many consecutive times from a single spin, in addition to the fact that you can also win three times just from the initial symbol drop. There’s no limit to the number of times this re-filling feature can occur either, or it’s even possible to trigger a bonus round by hitting four or more scatter symbols during a re-filling phase.

Alien Fruits Slot Bonus Features

Only one bonus scatter symbol can be present on any of the game’s six reels at any one time, and you’ll need a minimum of four of these to hit simultaneously to trigger the free spins feature. A four-scatter trigger will award 10 free spins, whilst five or six will increase this to 20 or 30 free spins, respectively.

Free Spins

In this mode, a new multiplier symbol is added to the reel strips. Whenever one of these lands, it will take on a random multiplier of somewhere between 2x and 100x. Multiplier symbols are not removed from the reels during the re-filling phase, so if you are lucky, you can start to collect quite a few of them at the bottom of the screen during an especially lucky free spin round. Once all re-filling phases have been completed, the value of all visible multiplier symbols on the screen will be added together before being applied to your total win.

Bonus Buy

The base game of Alien Fruits is quite a bit of fun, but it’s a lot more fun once you add those prize-boosting multiplier symbols into the mix! If you want to bypass the base game and go directly to the free spins, you can choose to do so at the cost of 100x the normal price per spin.

Pros

  • Higher than average jackpot of 15,000x!
  • The scatter-pay mechanic is easy to understand and lots of fun.
  • Seeing a 100x multiplier symbol drop in the bonus round makes for a truly exciting moment!

Cons

  • The base game would benefit from a modifier or two – as with most slots, you’ll spend most of your playtime just hoping to hit the scatters here.
  • Slightly dodgy audio engineering lets down what is otherwise an excellently presented online slot.

Final Thoughts

Yes, this might be a clone of an all-time classic, but BGaming has put in the hard yards with the design and graphics on this slot to create a truly enjoyable slot to play. What makes this one stand out from the countless clones is the maximum win of 15,000x. Now that is otherworldly.
