Slot Overview

Alice: Time Rift is Thunderkick’s attempt at entering the Alice in Wonderland genre, although they’ve chosen a slightly darker, more sinister version of events! The game is designed around a pretty unique dual-function Time Rift symbol that acts as both Wild and Scatter, a Sticky Respin mechanic, and a Free Spins bonus, and on paper, it looks interesting. Does this video slot deliver, though? Let’s find out.

Gameplay & Bonus Features

Gameplay & Bonus Features

Alice: Time Rift is played on a five-reel, three-row layout with ten fixed paylines, and wins are formed from left to right. You can bet from €0.10 to €100 per spin, and the game’s RTP is 94.20%.

The Time Rift symbol is the game’s central mechanic, and it acts as both a Wild and a Scatter. As a Wild, it substitutes for all regular symbols to help you form wins, and whenever it does, or when it lands and triggers a Sticky Respin condition, it activates the Sticky Respins feature.

During Sticky Respins, winning symbols and all Time Rift symbols lock in place while the remaining positions respin. After each respin, any new Time Rift symbols that land also lock in place, along with any symbols that contribute to a new or improved payline win. This feature simply continues for as long as a new Time Rift symbol or winning symbols land in view.

Landing 3+ Time Rift scatter symbols on any spin triggers the Free Spins bonus, and this awards you 8, 10, or 12 Free Spins. Now, if you trigger the bonus with 3 scatter symbols, one symbol is randomly chosen; four scatters choose a premium symbol only, while five scatter symbols select Alice, the highest-value symbol.

During Free Spins, the Expanding Win mechanic comes into play. When your selected symbol lands on 3+ reels, the symbols expand to cover their whole reels, and payouts are then calculated. Plus, if two or three selected symbols land on the same reel, a 2x or 3x multiplier is applied, too.

Bonus Buy & BET+

There are also a few Bonus Buy/Ante Bet options in Alice: Time Rift. The BET+ toggle offers two ante-bet modes: Bonus Boost, at 1.5x your base game stake, which makes the bonus round 2x more likely to land, and Bonus Boost Plus, which costs 2.5x and makes it 5x more likely. You can also buy into the Free Spins bonus directly for a cost of 100x.

Theme & Design

Alice: Time Rift does away with the happy-go-lucky traditional Wonderland vibe, and introduces something a lot darker. The reels are set against an urban backdrop, and you’ll see cobbled streets that are, basically in decay – kind of gothic in a way.

The character symbols are all really nicely designed, and you’ll see a green-eyed figure in a top hat, a manic blue-haired grinning character, a fierce red-headed woman, and a white-haired sorceress. Alice herself appears as the game’s highest-value symbol, as you’d expect.

There’s also the special Time Rift symbol, which is a glowing clock face with a skull on it. More on that later. If you’re the type of player who enjoyed titles like Midas Golden Touch 2, and Pink Elephants Trinity, from Thunderkick, this will probably be one you’ll enjoy too.

Pros

  • Quite cool to be able to get the Alice symbol guaranteed with 5 Scatter symbols
  • Sticky Respins mechanic keeps the base game entertaining
  • It’s a superb-looking game

Cons

  • Very similar to the Book of Dead style of slot
  • RTP of 94.20% is well below-average
  • Bonus Buy/Bet+ options are unavailable in some regions

Final Thoughts

Alice: Time Rift is one of those Thunderkick releases that looks quite simple at first - but has more depth to it than you might think. Now, yes, obviously there's no escaping the fact that it's very similar to the Book of Dead-style expanding symbol mechanic found in hundreds of slots today, but we like that Thunderkick has taken the time to do things a bit differently, and we feel that the addition of the re-spin mechanic in the base game does do just enough to make it feel original.

It's also pretty unique how the selected symbol is tied to the number of scatter symbols you land, and while it does mean that you end up with low-paying symbols most of the time, it's nice that a four or five scatter trigger instantly creates a better bonus for you.

Yes, the RTP is a little bit on the low side at 94.20%, but this is in keeping with pretty much all of Thunderkick's recent games. If you enjoy the expanding symbol style slot and like some re-spins thrown into the mix too, then this is probably a game you'll want to check out.
