Game Overview

Alexander the third, commonly called Alexander the Great, was the king of the ancient Greek civilisation at Macedon. He was born in 356 BC and lived until 323 BC – yes, that’s just 32 short years, but believe it or not, that wasn’t a terrible lifespan in an era without modern medicine, science, or biological understanding. So what does any of this have to do with Red Tiger’s new Alexander the Great online slot? Why, nothing, of course, but as they always say – the more you know… This is a 243-way machine, although this can increase significantly if your conquest across the Middle East goes to plan. The RTP is just a tad below average at 95.75%, and the max win comes in at 10,467.5x bet.

It’s interesting that this game has popped up today, as I’ve just been writing an article this week regarding how slot developers are borrowing tricks from video game developers in their quest to create more compelling titles, and the gameplay of Alexander the Great borrows more than a few tricks from the video game developer playbook. The game sees you moving through four stages – you start in Macedonia and then seek to perform three successful conquests of Egypt, Babylonia, and Persia, each of which comes with an increased playfield size, more ways to win, and more features. At any time, you may just be rewarded with a break from the battlefield with Alexander’s Treasure bonus round – a free spin feature.

Personally, even 10,500x my bet couldn’t convince me to step back into the dark ages to go marauding through the holy lands just to prove how tough I am. But, thankfully, I can pretend, thanks to our free demo slot of Alexander the Great! It’s available to play below:

I’m not sure that ‘Alexander’ is much of a theme, so why don’t we concentrate on the word ‘Great’? Sounds good to me, at least. So, If Alexander the Great were alive today, I’d bet he couldn’t take on The Great Pigsby – either in his Megapays or Megaways incarnations. I’m just kidding, of course – Alexander would have slain that swine, and he and his closest soldiers would have had themselves one hell of a hog roast!

Now, when looking at the paytable of this game, it’s important to remember that the playfield and number of payways can significantly increase the value of these numbers. Now I just have to work out how to describe these symbols… okay, we have a cat carrying a gold jug with a payout of 5x the bet for a full payway of six of a kind, followed next by a statue of some sort of winged creature with a return of 3x for all six of its symbols. Next, there’s a depiction of the Sphinx, which will award you 2.5x your bet for a six of a kind combination, and finally, a rather plain bronze pot that will pay you 2x for a complete payway. As for the low pays, there’s nothing too exciting to report here – they start with half your bet back for six tens and max out at 1.5x your bet for six aces.

I say it with Red Tiger’s games every time, but you never know what you’ll get regarding the betting range of this developer’s slots! In the case of Alexander the Great, the minimum/maximum betting limits have been set at sensible values of €0.10 and €10.00, respectively.

Base Game & Modifiers

Alexander The Great Slot Paytable

After loading this game, you’ll be presented with a standard 5×3 video slot layout with 243 payways. In order to progress through the various parts of the ancient Holy Kingdom and earn those extra rows and payways, you’ll need to collect various scatter symbols – more on that later, though. What you do need to know right now is that wins are awarded for hitting at least three matching symbols starting from the leftmost reel.

Progression

The ‘video game’ type aspect of Alexander the Great is the progression feature, which requires you to collect Aristotle scatters to progress through various parts of the ancient lands.

Stage one is in Macedonia – your hometown – and you’ll need to fill the progress bar above the main reel set to move on to the game’s later stages.

  • Conquest of Egypt: After collecting 10 Aristotle scatters, the playfield gains an extra row, increasing the pay way count to 1,024.
  • Conquest of Babylonia: After collecting 20 Aristotle scatters, the playfield will again expand – this time with an extra reel, increasing the payway count to 4,096. Additionally, all wild symbols have a multiplier between 2x and 5x attached to them.
  • Conquest of Persia: The final stage requires another ten of those hard-to-hit Aristotle scatters, but make it this far, and you’ll earn yourself a 6×5 layout with 15,625 payways, as well as sticky wild symbols if the Alexander’s Treasure bonus is triggered.

Alexander The Great Slot Bonus Features

In the slots default configuration, bonus scatter symbols only appear on reels one, three, and five. When the playfield is expanded, the scatters can appear on reels one, two, five, and six. Confusingly though, only three can land at a time regardless of the reel setup.

When three scatters do hit, the symbols will flip over to reveal their reverse side, where you’ll learn how many free spins you have won – each scatter can be worth between one and seven spins, for a total of between three and twenty-one free spins.

Alexander’s Treasure Free Spins

How good this feature really is depends on what level of the game you have reached before triggering it – you really want to make it all the way to Persia if you want a realistic chance of hitting anything big though! Wild symbols do gain some additional modifiers in Egypt and Babylonia, but it’s the sticky wilds you get once you reach Persia that offer the real big wins!

Pros

  • Interesting gameplay mechanics with more features being unlocked as you progress.
  • Above average top win of around 10,500x the total bet.

Cons

  • Winnings are definitely on the small side in the first couple of stages.
  • The paytable does not fully explain the benefits applied to the wild symbols in Egypt and Babylonia.

Final Thoughts

An interesting attempt at a progression-style game that could really have benefitted from a few more story-based elements – if you’re going to borrow ideas from the video game industry, don’t forget the most important one – it’s only compelling if there’s a storyline to back it up!
