Game Overview
I feel as if I’ve spoken about Alchemy enough times to be considered an honorary alchemist at this point, which is probably not a good thing, considering that they are widely regarded to be nothing more than scam artists! The trouble is, Alchemy is just a somewhat popular theme with developers of online slots – take this release simply titled Alchemy, by Storm Gaming Technology, for example. This 10 payline machine has a very familiar feel to it visually, but perhaps that’s just the result of it being published on Relax’s platform. The maximum jackpot prize is given as 1541x, putting it firmly within the lower variance category, whilst the 95.8% RTP is just a tad below average.
I felt as if I needed to double-check everything with this game after finishing up the review the first time because I’d spotted at least one feature that wasn’t mentioned within the game’s paytable myself. After reloading the game, however, it later transpired that this feature – the expanding wild dragons – is mentioned on the introduction screen. It’s always nice for these things to be included everywhere a player might need them, but alas, I guess it’s only a minor omission. There’s also a free spins feature, a symbol upgrade feature in the style of Eye of Horus, and even a payout for the scatters, which tops out at 50x the total bet for all five symbols.
In truth, I think this game may well be more of a clone of Eye of Horus than I had first realised – if so, it’s quite a well-produced one though! Why not take a look for yourself with our free Alchemy slot demo? It’s available to play below.
Alchemy Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Speaking of Eye of Horus then, we recently reviewed a strange update to that game which was a Megaways version that didn’t really seem like anything more than a downgrade over its predecessor! I’m pleased to say that there’s nothing like that going on with this release, but then again, this isn’t a Megaways title – using 10 payline at least gives this game its own identity, even if it does also use a kind of “Arabian Nights” theme for its visuals and music. I wouldn’t quite call it an Egyptian slot, but it certainly isn’t far off.
The high-paying symbols that feature in Alchemy look a little like hieroglyphs, but they are drawn on white papyrus squares, making them a little odd to look at. The yellow circle is the most valuable of the bunch, awarding 50x the total bet for a full payway of five of a kind, followed by the A-like symbol at 40x, the Triangle/Eye at 30x, the Sun/Moon at 25x, and then, I guess it’s a gate at 20x and a flower at 10x. Okay, I’m not really sure about a couple of those, but I’m hoping my descriptions were at least good enough to understand what I’m talking about! As for the low pays, there are just four of them, which is always nice to see! The Aces can pay up to 10x the total bet for a complete payway, whilst the Kings max out at 7.5x, and the Queens/Jacks are even lower at 5x each.
I’m also reasonably happy with the betting range – there are minimum/maximum permitted stakes of €0.20 and €10.00 per spin respectively, which is a little bit of a tight spread but should be just enough for most players.
Base Game & Modifiers
The playfield used in Alchemy features five columns of three rows each, for a total of 10 paylines. That’s a reasonably standard configuration for an online video slot and works well here. All symbols require at least three matches on adjacent reels starting from the left to award a win.
Expanding Wilds
Dragon wild symbols appear on reels two, three, and four only. When this occurs, the symbol will expand to cover its entire reel before winnings are evaluated. During the bonus round, the dragon wild will act as a symbol upgrade trigger, removing lower-paying symbols from the reels.
Alchemy Slot Bonus Features
The paytable doesn’t tell you much about this game’s free spins feature, and even the information which is there seems to contradict itself a little at times. Hitting three scatter symbols awards a small cash prize of 2x the total bet, whilst four or five scatters increase this to 20x or 50x the bet, respectively. Regardless of the number of triggering scatters, you’ll still only receive ten free spins.
Free Spins
It took me some time to reach this feature as there is no bonus buy facility available, but when I did get there, I discovered that the headline feature is a symbol upgrade feature that activates whenever a wild lands on the screen. Every wild that lands during the free spins will remove a lower-paying symbol from the reels until only the top handful of symbols remain. At that point, it is no longer possible to upgrade any more symbols, but your payouts should now be substantial enough that you shouldn’t be too upset about this!
Pros
- The symbol upgrade feature during free spins can be very generous if you can unlock the maximum number of symbols.
- Expanding dragon symbols make big wins possible even in the base game.
Cons
- A Jackpot of 1,431x is definitely on the small side.
- It feels quite difficult to hit the free spins.
Final Thoughts
The visuals of Alchemy didn’t grab me, but many of the features on offer here have already proven to make for a highly successful game for other developers in the past. If mid to lower-variance games are your thing, then this isn’t a bad one to try.
