Game Overview

4 Fantastic Vikings Go Ice Fishing is the Arctic-inspired sequel to 4ThePlayer’s “Vikings Go” game series, and this time, the Vikings have ended up lost in frozen water, fighting krakens, reeling in cash prizes, and triggering a re-spin bonus. With 4,096 ways to win and a maximum win potential of up to 10,240x, the game looks good on paper, but does 4ThePlayer deliver? Let’s find out.

Theme & Design

4ThePlayer has essentially taken the original 4 Fantastic Vikings Go Fishing and placed all the characters into a frozen, northern-sea-esque theme. Aesthetically, it looks pretty good, and the graphics are sharp, smooth, and easy on the eye.

However, a quick look above the reels reveals some striking similarities to Yggdrasil Gaming’s “Viking’s Go” series of games, which includes early classics like Vikings Go Berzerk and more modern releases like Vikings Go To Egypt and Vikings Go To Olympus.

Still, the game looks decent enough, and each Viking has their own reel position and personality. There’s also a new member of the crew, Hross, who’s a walrus and adds a bit of well-needed light-hearted fun into the mix!

4 Fantastic Vikings Go Ice Fishing Gameplay & Bonus Features

4 Fantastic Vikings Go Ice Fishing is played on a six-reel, four-row layout. There is a 4,096-ways-to-win mechanic, so you don’t need to worry about paylines. You can stake from €0.10 to €20 per spin, and the game offers a disappointingly below-average RTP of 94%.

The gameplay revolves around Money Ways, reel-specific cash values, random base game modifiers, and a respin bonus where Vikings go “Berzerk” (are you starting to see the similarities yet), and firstly, we’ll discuss how the Money Ways work.

On the reels, you’ll notice that Fish symbols can land, with cash values attached to them. The value of these fish is dependent on which reel they land on. On reel 1, for example, they can be worth up to 1.8x, while on reel 6, they can be worth up to 5,000x. To win any amounts shown, you simply need to land three or more adjacent amounts, from left to right.

Next up is Mighty Kraken. Randomly, a giant 2×2 Ice Blox can appear. When it lands, it reveals four individual cash prizes. The Kraken smashes it apart, rearranging the prizes on the grid to create or boost a winning Money Way combo.

Now, the game’s main bonus is the Fighting Respins. This is triggered by landing 3+ scatter symbols anywhere in view or by collecting coins above the reels. Once activated, reels 1 and 2, plus any reel belonging to the triggering Vikings, unlock, and that Viking then becomes “Bezerk”, meaning it always wins its battles. You begin the bonus round with 3 re-spins and each time a new Cash Prize lands, this re-spin counter resets back to 3.

Cash prizes lock in place, so it’s your standard Hold & Win affair here, really, but there are some reel-specific modifiers – one for each Viking. Hross, on reel 2, can award up to +4 additional re-spins, while Sigrid, on reel 3, casts a net that guarantees a fish on the next spin. Knut, on reel 4, adds a random multiplier of up to 20x to a random position. Yngve, on reel 5, increases the value of all visible prizes. Finally, there’s Gunnar, on reel 6, who instantly collects all visible prizes.

The Fighting Respins feature continues until no respins remain or all reels are unlocked and filled with symbols, and there’s also a Mystery Shark and Kraken feature inside the bonus that can multiply cash prizes or lock cash prizes onto the screen.

Bonus Buy

4 Fantastic Vikings Go Ice Fishing contains three Feature Buy options:

  • Guaranteed Mighty Kraken: Costs 20x your bet.
  • Fighting Respins: Costs 125x
  • Fighting Respins (with all Vikings Berzerk): 500x.

Pros

  • Win more than 10,000x.
  • Three “Buy Feature” options are available.
  • Some good bonus action + 4,096 ways to win.

Cons

  • Well-below-average RTP of 94%.
  • Very, VERY similar to Yggdrasil Gaming’s Vikings Go Berzerk.
  • Little variation compared to the original 4 Fantastic Vikings Go Fishing.

4 Fantastic Vikings Go Ice Fishing Slot Review Final Thoughts

4 Fantastic Vikings Go Ice Fishing has a few bright spots, sure: the 4,096-ways mechanic, Money Ways prizes, and a surprisingly entertaining walrus Viking, but overall, it struggles to escape the very shadow of the games it (so clearly) tries to copy.

The similarities to Yggdrasil’s Vikings Go series are impossible to ignore, and 4ThePlayer’s trademark issues are, once again, visible here: slightly dated graphics, clunky spin animations, and a gameplay that doesn’t feel, truly, smooth.

Sure, the bonus round can deliver some pretty solid wins thanks to reel-specific Viking modifiers, and you do have the potential to win up to 10,240x, but the below-average 94% RTP and heavy reliance on boring, overdone Hold & Win mechanics make the experience feel far less entertaining than it could.

If you’re a player looking for something original or a slot with polished production, then you’ll probably walk away feeling disappointed here; even fans of the original 4 Fantastic Vikings Go Fishing will see there’s not much “new” here.
