Game Overview
Some developers seem to have the capacity to pump out a seemingly endless supply of new games – take Pragmatic Play, for example. The trouble with that approach is that you are almost guaranteed to have more than your fair share of misses cluttering up your resulting library. On the other hand, smaller developers such as 4ThePlayer only publish a handful of new slots each year, so it’s critical that they get those games right. Enter 3 Lucky Witches, the follow-up to the developer’s popular 3 Lucky Leprechauns game from last year. With 243 payways, a 96% RTP, and a maximum jackpot of 5,000x the total bet, will these witches turn out to be as lucky as 4ThePlayer describes? Let’s find out!
The headline feature of 3 Lucky Leprechauns was a bonus ladder with 15 sections leading to the 5,000x jackpot at the top. This time around, the ladder has been replaced with a wheel – this is once again shown to the left of the main reel set, but it only has five levels to progress through to reach the jackpot in the centre. That should make it significantly easier to win the larger prizes, but the best part is that you can start on the fifth level of the wheel by hitting a five-scatter trigger during the base game. Throw in a ‘win spins’ free spin mode where prizes are guaranteed, a better-than-average pick-me feature with some big wins lurking underneath the objects, and the ability to purchase all the best features via a bonus buy menu, and you have a well-rounded feature package that should cater for all types of player.
Which witch will work out wonderfully for you? If you can say that three times in a row quickly, then our 3 Lucky Witches demo slot will magically appear below. Try it for yourself!
3 Lucky Witches Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I probably wouldn’t have guessed that this game was a follow-up to 3 Lucky Leprechauns if I hadn’t been told that fact, despite having reviewed the original game myself last year. Having taken another look at the game whilst writing this review, you can certainly see the similarities – both games have three protagonists, for example, and both share a feature which lets you choose your lucky witch (or leprechaun) to act as an additional wild symbol during play. It’s only a visual tweak mind, but I guess it’s nice to feel like you have a little bit more control over your destiny whilst you play! Both games look fantastic – the artists who work for 4ThePlayer are some of the best you’ll find anywhere in the industry, but the witching theme is much more to my taste than the leprechauns featured in the first game.
The black cats are the most valuable symbols on the reels of 3 Lucky Witches, with a maximum payout of 30x the total bet for a complete pay way of five of a kind. There’s a rather dark-looking bird – possibly a crow? – in second place, paying 20x the current stake for all five symbols, followed by a spellbook offering 10x for a complete payway. Two more medium-paying symbols follow; a green potion and a wax candle, both of which share equal returns of 8x the total bet. That just leaves the royals, which have been divided into two groups – the Aces and Kings both pay 5x for all five symbols, whilst the Queens/Jacks/Tens all pay 3x each. Whilst these payouts aren’t the highest you’ll find in a 243-way game, it’s worth noting that you can win a whole lot more via the game’s prize wheel.
You shouldn’t have any trouble finding a suitable bet when playing 3 Lucky Witches, no matter how large or small your bankroll may be. The minimum bet of €0.10 is easily low enough for those who don’t want to take too much of a risk, whilst the maximum of €30.00 per spin caters for those at the other end of the spectrum.
Base Game & Modifiers
3 Lucky Witches is a five-reel, three-row online slot that utilises the popular 243-way payout mechanic. The developer 4ThePlayer states in the game rules that ways-based slots remove paylines to make it easier to see winning combinations, which I can’t argue with! Interestingly, the game rules also provide some extra information about your chances of scoring a big win – after a hundred spins, the average best win all players can expect is in the region of 51x the total bet.
One in 10 players can expect to hit 241x, one in a hundred 768x, and one in a thousand (or 0.1%) may be lucky enough to hit 4,586x their stake. It’s always interesting to see the information presented in a different way, even if your results may be entirely different.
Witches Wheel
Landing three or more bonus scatters will take you to the Witches wheel bonus. I’m including this here rather than in the bonus section below because the wheel triggers quite frequently but often results in nothing more than a win of a few times your bet or a handful of win spins.
Mega Picks
Several levels of the bonus wheel include segments labelled “mega picks”. You can win different numbers of picks, and the size of the prizes hidden underneath the objects increases as you move towards the centre of the bonus wheel. If you prefer, you can skip the pick-me phase and choose a cash prize instead.
3 Lucky Witches Slot Bonus Features
Hitting three scatter symbols will not necessarily get you any free spins in this game, I’m afraid! Three scatters do give you a shot at the bonus wheel though (see above), and if you are lucky enough to hit one of the arrows, you can move to the higher levels of the wheel, where better prizes and bonuses can be found. A four-scatter trigger will automatically start you off on the third level of the wheel, whilst a five-scatter trigger will get you all the way to the fifth level – just one step away from a 5,000x jackpot!
Win Spin Free Spins Feature
Depending on which level of the bonus wheel you are on when you hit the ‘win spins’ feature, you can be awarded anywhere from 3 to 20 spins. Win spins come with a guaranteed multiplier of at least 3x, but depending on how they are triggered, you can sometimes get an increased multiplier of 5x, 6x, or even 10x.
Win spins, as the name suggests, always guarantee a prize – they may be small prizes, but you can be sure of hitting something on every single spin. Just like the Mega Picks bonus, the game will offer you the chance to take a cash equivalent instead of playing the spins if you prefer.
Bonus Buy
If permitted within your country or jurisdiction, the bonus buy menu offers three choices; 35x the current stake will get you instant access to the witches wheel, whilst the win spins bonus with 4-15 spins can be bought for 100x the total bet. If you have deeper pockets, you can buy the pick-me bonus for 250x the current stake.
Pros
- Fantastic presentation – Three Witches looks even better than Leprechauns.
- Several bonus features to try out, all with the ability to award big wins.
- Five levels on the bonus wheel seems a much easier obstacle to tackle than the 15 levels of the original game’s bonus ladder.
Cons
- The 5,000x jackpot is only average nowadays.
- Some players may feel that the bonus buy options are a little overpriced, especially because of the wide range of possible outcomes.
Final Thoughts
It’s clear that 4ThePlayer has taken player feedback onboard when creating this sequel, and the resulting game is undoubtedly superior to their earlier efforts. I still think doubling the jackpot would be a further improvement, and upping the minimum number of spins/picks awarded by the bonus buy menu would also make the game feel a little fairer. These aren’t huge problems though, and I’d still absolutely recommend 3 Lucky Witches overall.
