Slot Overview
3 Cursed Chests by Hacksaw Gaming is a dark, nautical-themed video slot designed with chest activation mechanics, respins, free spins, bonus upgrades and a disappointing maximum win potential of 2,500x. With so much going on, you’d be forgiven for assuming the win potential would be… better… but here we are, so, what did the Demoslot team make of the game during its review process? Let’s find out.
Gameplay & Bonus Features
3 Cursed Chests is played on a five-reel, three-row layout with 17 fixed paylines. The game has an RTP of 96.30%, and you can bet from €0.10 to €400 per spin. Now, the game’s core mechanic is Chest Activation. Green, Red and Blue Pot symbols charge their matching external chest, and once a chest is filled it can activate at the end of the spin.
Only one chest activates per spin, and each has a different effect. The Green Chest triggers Cursed Wilds Respin, and here, only regular paying symbols, wilds and wild multipliers can land. Wilds substitute for all regular symbols, while the multipliers stack additively before the win is calculated.
The Red Chest triggers the Cursed Coins Bonus, which is the hold and win-style part of the game. It uses three refilling lives, with coins sticking to the grid and resetting the counter whenever a new one lands. Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond Coins are worth between 0.2x and 1,000x.
Finally, there’s the Blue Chest, which activates Cursed FS Respins, where only Dead and FS symbols can land. Each FS symbol awards one free spin, and the feature can award 7 to 15 spins in total. From here, you can either be awarded the standard free spins mode, or Ghostly Gallows, the upgraded version.
During Treasure Cove, the base game mechanics remain, and you’re guaranteed a matching chest activation when a third pot of the same colour lands, while Ghostly Gallows makes pot symbols instantly activate the matching chest.
Bonus Buy
3 Cursed Chests includes several Bonus Buy/FeatureSpins options. Cursed FS FeatureSpins cost 5x per spin and give you a higher chance of landing Blue Pot symbols, while 3 Cursed Chests FeatureSpins cost 40x and guarantee all three Pot symbols. The Treasure Cove bonus costs 90x, and Ghostly Gallows costs 200x.

Theme & Design
3 Cursed Chests sits in a gloomy world full of cursed treasure, supernatural vibes, and dark themes. The overall presentation isn’t bad, but we can’t say it really fits the theme. Hacksaw says in the game sheet how the “dark, cursed treasure” vibe is the centre of the game, but when you load it up, it looks, to be honest, like you’re playing an old 2012 Quickspin release; it’s not dark, it’s not appealing, and it’s a pretty lazy design we feel.
How there’s a “dark” and “sinister” undertone to it, we have no idea, so if you’re expecting something like Cursed Seas or Cursed Treasure, where there actually is a dark/sinister vibe, this is probably going to leave you feeling disappointed.
Pros
- Three-chest activation system offers variety
- Decent RTP of 96.30%
- Good mixture of respins, Hold & Win bonuses, and upgraded free spins
Cons
- Low maximum win potential of 2,500x
- Activating the chests can be quite tough
- The theme is very... meh
Final Thoughts
3 Cursed Chests is one of those games that kind of looks good on paper but doesn't really deliver in reality. Yes, the three chest activation system is a fairly interesting idea, and on the rare occasions where everything does click, it can be quite enjoyable.
The problem, though, is getting there, because charging a chest takes work, and activating the right one takes a lot of luck. For all that effort and waiting around, you're capped at a pretty underwhelming max win of just 2,500x, which, in 2026, just doesn't really cut it in our opinion.
Another big issue, for us, is that nothing about 3 Cursed Chests feels actually cursed. Hacksaw may have leant quite hard into the dark and sinister treasure angle in their marketing, but the game itself looks like something that would have felt dated even five years ago, let alone today.
So, yes, the 96.3% RTP is fine, there's a decent selection of features, and the cursed coins bonus is fairly solid, but on the whole, none of this really gives us the "play now" vibe, and this is something we seem to be saying a lot recently of Hacksaw Gaming releases.
