Foxium is a creative online slot game studio founded in 2015 and headquartered in Tallinn, Estonia. Despite a relatively small portfolio of games, Foxium quickly gained recognition for its high-quality slots, which often feature rich storytelling, vibrant 3D graphics, and innovative mechanics. As the studio looked to gain a firmer footing within the industry, a strong partnership was formed with Microgaming/Global Games, which allowed the provider to distribute their games on the Quickfire Platform, potentially putting their content in front of millions of players around the world.
Despite such collaboration and with so many developers now in the iGaming sector, you may be a player who has seen Foxium in casino lobbies but knows little about them or perhaps one who hasn’t encountered them at all. We’re here as always to fill in the details for you, and in our Foxium review, we’ll get you up to speed as we cover topics such as company history, the in-game mechanics used in their titles, licensing, and for those who just want to play the games, a library of free demo slots from the studio you can try.

Company History & Background
Foxium was established in 2015 by a team under CEO Åke André. He was joined by co-founders Maria Dementieva, Daniil Sanders, and Igor Vesselov, who brought together years of experience in game design, art, and software development. The studio started with one goal in mind: to develop slots with rich backstories, superb graphics, and something different from what the big players offered.
In its first few years, Foxium released a handful of innovative slots that began to put the studio on the map. Games like The Odd Forest, Lucky Bakery and FruitZ caught players’ attention. Just two years after launching, in 2017, Foxium Games released its first branded slot: Vampire: The Masquerade – Las Vegas.
Foxium’s strategy from its founding was to partner with larger platforms to reach a wide audience, and this came to life in late 2017 when the studio entered into an exclusive distribution deal with Microgaming’s Quickfire platform. The partnership (facilitated by the RNG Foundry accelerator and an investment from Velo Partners) allowed Foxium’s games to integrate into Quickfire’s massive network of online casinos. As a result, although Foxium was a young company, its slots became available across hundreds of casino sites worldwide under the Microgaming umbrella. This allowed Foxium to focus more on creating slots than worrying about licensing, compliance, and distribution.

Foxium Product Portfolio
Players can often be surprised by what gaming studios do and do not create as part of their larger portfolios. In this section, we will cover everything you can expect to discover when exploring the Foxium brand.
Online Slot Games
Foxium’s game portfolio consists exclusively of video slots, each with a highly unique theme and most with innovative features. The number of games they’ve released is pretty modest compared to most providers, but this is due to the huge amount of work that goes into producing each of their titles.
All Foxium slots are developed in HTML5, too, so they run smoothly on desktop and mobile devices. Below, we’ll be taking a look at five of their most popular slots:
Boom Pirates
One of Foxium Games’ most popular releases, Boom Pirates, is, of course, a slot set on the high seas, and it’s become one of the provider’s flagship games. The action starts on a 5×4 grid, with 1024-ways-to-win – but thanks to the unique Wonderways mechanic, the reels can randomly expand up to a colossal 9×6 grid with 10,077,696 ways!
In the Boom Pirates feature, cannon fire expands the reels, literally blowing up the grid, and the game also includes “Mary’s Swashbuckling Attack” (where the woman turns random symbols wild) and a free spins feature. You can also enable the Foxify mode, which increases your base game stake by 50% – but, in turn, increases the chance of you triggering the bonus.
The Great Albini
The Great Albini is another Foxium Games release that received critical acclaim, and it’s one of the most unique and innovative slots they’ve produced. This 5-reel, 25-payline slot follows the life of an old magician, and there are a ton of bonuses and features to look out for.
For example, landing a full stack of Mystery Box symbols during the base game triggers the Mystery Box Respin feature. You get three respins, and all mystery boxes stick in place (with the counter resetting if new boxes land) until no more appear or the grid is full. When the respins end, all mystery boxes reveal a matching symbol, which, if a premium, almost guarantees a big win!
The game’s main bonus is a free spins feature, triggered by landing Bonus Box scatter symbols on the reels. During the bonus, the reels expand to a 5×6 layout with 50 paylines, and all the high-paying symbols can land stacked, too. Plus, a multiplier comes into play, so even modest wins can be worth a lot more now!
Stumpy McDoodles
Stumpy McDoodles is Foxium’s take on the ever-popular Irish luck theme, and while that’s a very overdone theme for many players, their version is pretty decent. This 5×4, 20-payline slot introduces you to Stumpy, a funny leprechaun, and his wife – Penny!
The game is packed with features, like most of Foxium’s games, and on any spin, a Stumpy Random Wilds event can trigger where Stumpy’s pot of gold appears and adds a cluster of wild symbols to the reels along with a random multiplier. Another innovative feature is the Rainbow Respin. If two scatter symbols land without the third, the game gives you a second-chance respin to try and hit the third scatter required to trigger the free spins bonus!
In the free spins, you’ll find yourself needing to collect coin symbols. Doing so increases the game’s persistent multiplier, and you can also win additional wilds, although it’s impossible to re-trigger any additional spins, unfortunately.
Astro Legends: Lyra and Erion
Astro Legends: Lyra and Erion is one of Foxium’s most unique games – and it does away with traditional reels, instead opting for a cluster pays mechanic. The game’s played on a strange-looking hexagonal grid formed of 22 crystal cells in a 1-2-3-4-5-4-3 layout!
Instead of paylines, wins are achieved by forming clusters of matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically. The game also includes a range of bonuses and features, including Multiplier Wilds and the Lyra Spirit Bonus, where the female character can transform into a wolf to chase crystals in a mini-game!
3 Tiny Gods
Finally, we’ve got 3 Tiny Gods – a fresh, modern take on a classic ancient Egyptian theme. This 5-reel, 4-row slot introduces three deities brought to life as animal-gods. You can see them hovering over the reels at all times!
The slot is designed around a medium variance math model with 30 fixed paylines – quite an unusual number for a 5×4 game. Now, what makes this slot stand out is its Jackpot Mini-Game. On any spin, gold coins can randomly cover the last reel. When they do, it can trigger a pick-and-click bonus where you can win one of three fixed jackpots – the Mini, Midi, or Maxi jackpot.
The game also boasts a Mystery of Horus feature: on any non-winning spin, the god Horus can shuffle the reels to guarantee a win or trigger the free spins. The free spins themselves are fast-paced, and you’ll find a few modifiers, including extra wilds, the removal of low-paying symbols, or entry into the Jackpot Mini-Game!
Jackpot Slots
Foxium does not currently offer any network progressive jackpots (the kind that links across multiple casinos, like Mega Moolah or Mega Fortune). Instead, the provider focuses on local jackpot features within its games. Several Foxium slots include multi-level jackpots or bonus prizes that act like mini-jackpots – but they’re exclusive to that game and don’t increase much.
If you read our five mini-slot reviews earlier, you’ll have seen that the fifth game, “3 Tiny Gods, also incorporates three fixed jackpot prizes into the game. These can be won through the game’s bonuses and features, and you’ll find a similar mechanic in a couple of Foxium Games’ other titles.
Table Games, Bingo, and Other Casino Games
Foxium is dedicated solely to slot games, which means the company does not offer any other types of casino games. Unfortunately, if you’re looking to play casino table games like blackjack or roulette, you’ll need to choose another software provider.
While some players will find this annoying, it’s worth noting that this is quite common with smaller game developers, especially studios like Foxium Games, who put together detailed slots. They’ve chosen to spend their time developing the games they know best and leaving the table games to the larger providers.

Game Mechanics, How They Work, and Unique Features
Foxium’s games use a variety of game mechanics to keep things exciting, and while many of their slots use a payline format, they’ve also explored others like ways to win, and cluster pays. Below, we’ll look at the main mechanics they’ve implemented into their games.
Paylines
The majority of Foxium’s slots use the traditional payline mechanic, meaning you need to land symbols on specific patterns across the reels – usually from left to right. All Foxium Games slots that use paylines are fixed mechanics, meaning you can’t adjust the number of active lines per spin.
Popular Payline Games From Foxium:
- Adelia: The Fortune Wielder
- The Great Albini
- Stumpy McDoodles
Cluster Pays
Cluster pays is a modern mechanic where symbols pay in groups (clusters). These clusters must contain a certain number of symbols(specific to each game paytable), and they need to touch each other horizontally or vertically. Typically, slot games with the cluster mechanic also incorporate cascading reels into the gameplay.
Popular Cluster Pays Games From Foxium:
- Astro Legends: Lyra and Erion
Scatter Pays
Scatter pays-based slots award wins when a specific amount of matching symbols land anywhere within the playfield. Often referred to as grid slots, these games usually include exciting features and are classified as high-volatility releases.
Popular Scatter Pays Games From Foxium
- 3 Tiny Gods: Bonanza
- Gods of Seas: Triton’s Fortune
Ways to Win
Ways to Win games have been popular for over a decade, and they were one of the first non-payline-based mechanics to gain popularity in the iGaming world. In ways-to-win games, fixed paylines are eliminated, allowing for symbol combinations anywhere on consecutive reels. This means you can land three (or sometimes two) or more matching symbols from left to right, and their position on the reels doesn’t matter.
Popular Way to Win Games From Foxium:
- The Lost Riches of Amazon
- Boom Pirates
- Cossacks: The Wild Hunt
Bonus Buy
Not all of the slot games in Foxium’s portfolio have a feature buy option included, but you will find it in some of the newer releases. Typically, in these games, players can access the bonus round immediately at the cost of around 100x the current bet.
Unique Features from Foxium
Foxify™
Perhaps Foxium Games’ signature innovation, the Foxify button, is an optional bet feature you’ll find on offer in some games, such as Boom Pirates and 3 Tiny Gods. If you decide to activate Foxify, you pay an additional percentage on top of your bet (usually a 50% increase). In exchange, the game increases the probability of triggering special features, usually the game’s main bonus, which is often a free spins feature.
Wonderways™
When Big Time Gaming (BTG) released its Megaways mechanic, the world of online slots started changing, and game developers around the world were quickly trying to come up with their own innovative mechanics. Wonderways is Foxium’s answer, and this mechanic was first seen in Boom Pirates and then in Cossacks: The Wild Hunt.
Wonderways is Foxium’s proprietary expanding reel engine. Unlike traditional expanding wilds, Wonderways expands the entire reel grid itself. In Boom Pirates, for example, extra rows and columns are added to the reels at random or during the free spins, taking the layout from 5×4 to a massive 9×6 size. This massively increases the number of ways to win from 1,024 up to 10 million+!

Our Conclusion: I definitely enjoyed testing this game, and I only wish that Foxium had included a bonus buy facility to make it easier for me to get a better idea of just how easy it is to hit the bigger dynamite shapes shown on the paytable. Nevertheless, I couldn’t take advantage of such a feature in real money mode as a UK player anyway!

Our Conclusion: It took a little while for me to warm up to 4 Masks of Inca, but by the time I reached this point in my review, I was fully convinced by what Foxium has put together here. This has to be one of the developer's best games to date and is certainly not to be missed.

Commitment to Player Safety & Fairness
Licensing & Regulation
Foxium’s titles are distributed via Games Global (formerly Microgaming) Quickfire; they also fall under the regulatory umbrella of any platform they’re on. For example, Quickfire’s platform is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission and others, meaning Foxium games can be offered in the UK and will have been tested to UKGC standards even if Foxium itself isn’t specifically licensed there.
Fair Play & Security
Every Foxium slot runs on a random number generator, and this, along with all other parts of their games, is tested by an approved third-party testing house. While Foxium Games doesn’t reveal which testing house it uses on its website, some of the major names in the space include eCOGRA, iTech Labs, GLI, and QUINEL.
Partnerships & Collaborations
From its early days, Foxium decided to try to partner with larger platforms and developers, and these collaborations have been crucial in helping the software provider promote their games to as many players as possible.
Arguably, the most significant partnership in Foxium’s history is with Microgaming’s Quickfire platform (now under Games Global). In 2017, Foxium agreed to make Quickfire the exclusive distributor of its upcoming games, meaning that any online casino wanting Foxium slots would access them via the Quickfire integration. The partnership proved a huge success for Foxium, allowing their games to get on the screens of millions of potential players.
Foxium also partnered with RNG Foundry, an iGaming accelerator program backed by venture firm Velo Partners. Foxium’s involvement with RNG Foundry started before they met Microgaming, and initially, RNG Foundry provided them with funding, mentorship, and business development. Velo Partners invested in Foxium, and through their industry contacts, this is actually how Foxium was introduced to Microgaming! Alongside Quickfire, Foxium has also made its games available via several other aggregation platforms. For example, some early Foxium titles appeared on the NYX Open Gaming System (OGS), which is now part of Scientific Games (Light & Wonder) digital library. Foxium is listed as a provider in the SOFTSWISS Game Aggregator and on Bragg’s Oryx Hub.
Corporate Social Responsibility
As a smaller studio, Foxium may not have well-known corporate social responsibility programs like other providers, but it still does its best to contribute positively to the iGaming industry.
For example, Foxium supports responsible gaming by designing games that follow responsible gaming features. This means that their games have all of the responsible gambling tools required by law, including loss/win limits and reality check timers.

Final Summary
Foxium may not have the most extensive portfolio of slots, nor does it have the longest history among software providers – but it’s a studio that’s made its mark on the iGaming industry. Founded with the aim of “outfoxing the ordinary”, Foxium has consistently done just that, releasing slots with innovative mechanics, rich storytelling, and superb attention to detail.
Whether it’s the huge reel expansions found in Boom Pirates, the character-driven features in Stumpy McDoodles, or the unique cluster format of Astro Legends, Foxium Games has done a fantastic job of creating slots that are designed to stick in players’ memories.
Sure, Foxium remains one of the smaller game developers, and it’s unlikely we’ll ever see them catch up with the likes of NetEnt or Thunderkick – but that’s not their purpose – and they’re quite happy with that!
