Here’s the eagerly awaited follow-up to Big Time Gaming’s legendary Bonanza online slot, one of the first games to set off the Megaways craze! It’s quite funny looking back – when you open the settings page of this game, it states, “featuring the unique Megaways mechanic…” they aren’t quite so unique now, guys! Predictably then, Extra Chilli Megaways (Bonanza 2) includes up to 117,649 Megaways, a 96.15% RTP and a maximum win of 20,000x your bet.
As far as the feature set is concerned, there isn’t much new here over the original Bonanza game – I think it may be a case of “If it isn’t broke, why fix it?” to be honest! The cascading wins are back, along with the extra horizontal reel and the progressive multiplier free spin bonus round. What is new is the free spin gamble feature, allowing you to try and boost your bonus round with up to 24 free spins! We’ve also got a bonus buy option this time, which is quite a dangerous pairing – whatever you do, don’t get too sucked into buying features and then gambling them away instead of playing them!

Extra Chilli Megaways Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
As the name implies, Extra Chilli adds, well, a bunch of Chillis to the setup that was established in the first Bonanza online slot. The two games share similar visual styling, which looks a bit cluttered here if I’m honest, but I doubt that will put players off when the game can award such enormous wins! We recently looked at another new Big Time Gaming slot from this lineage – Bonanza Megapays – and I expect the developer to create an updated Megapays version of Extra Chilli at some point.
The paytable features a single very high-paying symbol – the purple chilli – which has a return of 50x your bet for a full payway of six of a kind. After that, we have the red chilli at 7.5x your bet for all six symbols, and then the blue and green chillies, each paying 2x your bet for a complete payway. The Ace and King have the highest payouts from the lower-paying group at 1.75x your bet for six of a kind, whilst the Queen/Jack will pay 1x, and the lowly Ten/Nine are worth just 0.8x the current bet for all six symbols. There’s no cash reward for hitting the scatters, nor anything for the wilds, but the symbols that do pay are stacked on the reels meaning that you stand an excellent chance of winning on a large number of payways simultaneously on each winning spin.
The minimum bet is a little higher than average here at €0.20 per spin, whilst the maximum of €25.00 is also a little on the low side by top-tier slot standards. Most players should be able to find a wager to suit them, but there could be a handful of players who are less than happy with the options available.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game of Extra Chilli is played on six vertical reels, which can divide into up to seven “rows” each – the exact number is determined for each reel individually on every spin. Combined with the top horizontal reel, positioned over reels two through five, this adds up to a maximum total of 117,649 “Megaways” – effectively payways – on each spin. Of course, with such a ludicrous number of pay ways, the line hits shown on the paytable will not be as large as those you would find on, say, a ten-line slot.
Reactions
All winning symbols (except scatters) will cause a reaction on the main reel set, causing them to explode immediately after landing. The symbols will then be replaced by new ones dropping in from the top of the reels, or the right, in the case of the extra horizontal reel. This allows you to win several times on a single paid spin.
Extra Chilli Megaways Slot Free Spins Feature
The bonus round is what it’s always been about in the Bonanza games – this is where the biggest wins can be found, after all! You’ll need to hit three or more of the “H” “O” “T” scatter symbols to bag yourself eight free spins, after which the game will offer you the chance to gamble the bonus round for the opportunity to win more spins, up to a maximum of 24.

After the free spins feature starts, it is possible to add further free spins to your remaining total by hitting three more scatters while the feature is in play. Four more free spins will be added to your remaining counter for every set of three scatter symbols that land on the reel set.
During the free spins, there is a progressive win multiplier which starts at 1x at the beginning of the bonus round, increasing by 1x every time a winning combination is removed from the reels. The multiplier will continue accumulating for the duration of the bonus round, which is why it may just be worth trying to gamble for those extra free spins before the feature begins! Ultimately, this is one of the most high-risk, high-reward bonus rounds you will likely play!
Feature Drop Bonus Buy
Considering the insane volatility of the bonus round, it’s quite surprising that Big time Gaming has priced their bonus buy facility at just 50x the regular price per spin. This seems like a bargain for sure, but as mentioned earlier in this review, be careful using this option and then gambling away the bonus round – it’s extremely tempting but can empty your bankroll in the blink of an eye!
The Feature Drop is another part to look out for in the bonus buy feature. This will lower each time special BTG Coins land in view. You can then buy the bonus at a lower cost, or if the amount reaches zero, the free spins will trigger on the next spin.
