It’s pretty surprising how few online slots use horses for their theme – horse racing is the most popular sport in the world for betting on, not to mention all of the people who enjoy simply riding them in their free time. Aside from Pragmatic Play’s Happy Hooves, I can’t think of many examples other than the ageing Frankie Dettori slots by Playtech. Colt Lightning is a much more modern game than those other examples – the graphics are better drawn and presented in high definition, the animations are smoother, and the top jackpot of 25,000x is much more in line with what players expect in 2023. Still, it doesn’t have everything – there’s no bonus buy facility, for example, which may be frustrating for players who enjoy taking advantage of such things.

There are two high-paying colt symbols on the paytable – the regular colt awards 6x the bet for all six symbols, whilst the super colt only appears during the bonus round and awards twice as much at 12x for a complete payway. The bald eagle will pay you 5x the bet for a full payway of five of a kind, followed by the tiger at 4.5x, the wolf at 4x and the snake at 3x. As for the low-paying symbols, these feature the typical 10-A royal symbols with corresponding payouts of between 1.2x and 2.5x the total bet. The reels also include wild and scatter symbols, but neither of these has any cash payout attached to them, unfortunately.

The main screen of Colt Lightning wasn’t really what I expected, considering that it’s a horse-themed slot – the selection of animals that decorate the reels would not look out of place in a game such as Buffalo Gold! The reel set is a little unusual, too, with three rows on reels one and five, plus four more on reels two to four. This strange shape results in 576 payways, but you’ll still need at least three matching symbols on adjacent reels to score a win.
